OAKLAND– T-MobileUSAis staging a grand opening celebration at its FirstParkcustomer-care facility here after having hired at least 630 employees in the past year.
After an initial job fair that attracted hundreds of applicants, the company has continued hiring locals at the rate of around 25 per month, according to First Park Chief Operating Officer Leonard Dow. T-Mobile’s success helps provide an anchor for the FirstParkfacility, Dow said.
“We’re very, very fortunate to have T-Mobile here,” he said. “Sometimes people suggest that T-Mobile is to FirstParkas a major tenant would be to a commercial outlet. It just helps so much in our marketing that they elected to go here.”
Dow said the effects of his marketing efforts would be much more limited if representatives couldn’t point to T-Mobile as a company that had taken FirstParkup on its offer. T-Mobile came to Maineas a result of a team effort from a wide range of local entities, including representatives of FirstPark, Central Maine Growth Council, Colby
College, as well as Gov. John E. Baldacci, U.S.Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe and others. Some of these and other local and state-level public figures plan to attend the grand opening and tour, which will begin at 10 a.m.Thursday. The event will showcase the results of all the efforts from the various parties involved, the customer-care center’s general manager, Mark Nolan said. “You may be wondering why we’re just now having this grand opening event when we’ve actually been open for nearly 12 months,” he said. “It’s because we want the focus to be on our customer-service professionals.” Nolan said executives wanted to wait for the grand opening until they had the chance to put as much of the team in place as possible. Ultimately, T-Mobile will employ a full staff of 900 employees, according to their plans. The Oaklandfacility offers employees a cyber cafe, television lounge, workout room, mother’s room, ergonomic work stations, game room, garden patch and a deli.
