MTN to make the EPL shine

After being the first and the only African global sponsor for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the Middle East and Africa operator MTN has inked a three-year broadcast sponsorship of the English Premier League in Africa.

According to the CMO,MTN , Santie Botha , the three-season deal’s value not been disclosed, but the period between 2010/11 to 2012/13 will see the operator sponsor SuperSport’s English Premiership broadcasts in South Africa and the rest of Africa as well as Canal+’s French broadcasts of the League in Africa. With this sponsorship, MTN will bring the excitement from live English Premiership matches to the homes of millions of football fans in Africa.
In addition to this, MTN will also sponsor the broadcasts of some of the best European league matches, specifically Bundesliga and La Liga.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Network stability has been reported by mobile operator MTN South Africa and it also reported that its network will be 100 percent operational in the days leading up to and during the opening match of the 2010 FIFA World between South Africa and Mexico on June 11.

The MTN network did not experience any congestion whatsoever even after extreme demands has been placed on its network over the three days leading up to the opening match. According to the firm’s CTO Sameer Dave, the network was very stable and able to accommodate the high demand while from June 9 to June 12, there was a massive increase in data usage driven by 3G/HSPA and the subscriber-generated SMS volumes reached a total of 25 million over the four-day period, peaking at 6.46 million on June 11 at an average of 6.26 million SMS sent over the four days.

Network coverage has been enhanced at all ten of the FIFA-approved stadiums and the spectators are provided with the best possible coverage in terms of voice and data, but it also ring-fences each stadium so that it does not impact on the rest of the network.

The football website Goal.com and Handmark are set to launch the Goal.com mobile app for iPhone while preparing for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The app will be supporting the content in four languages- English UK; English US; Spanish  Spain; Spanish US; Spanish Latin America; French; and Italian.

The app will enable a user to access the latest breaking football news, including the 2010 FIFA World Cup, UEFA Champions League and transfer activity. It can be downloaded for free from the Handmark website.

Under this campaign, MTN and its partners will collect names and support from the public, footballers, and celebrities to petition all governments to meet their Education for All targets by 2015.

The aim behind this campaign has been classified as providing good quality public education to all children and adults by 2015 and prioritizing those who are currently missing out on an education, getting them into school, and making sure that once they’re in school, they get the chance to learn with qualified teachers.

An international communications campaign will also be run by the operator to harness public support for 1Goal, coordinated by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association. The association will enable millions of people to sign up via a host of mobile response mechanisms

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Optus 3G phone subscribers will now get to see live 2010 FIFA World Cup for free. The company has entered into a deal with FIFA (F©d©ration Internationale de Football Association) for the streaming of the live matches. Though the entire 3G mobile device already have the application, the iPhones will receive the solution for the broadcast before the World Cup kick starts in June 2010.

Footage captured by the cameras recording the game for the mobile phone form factor will be supplied by FIFA to mobile broadcasters. Unless there are two simultaneous games, all the operators will receive the same feed.

Optus said that it will give priority to the games played by Australian teams. Besides, it has also entered into another agreement with SBS, a television broadcaster for additional footage available from its “The World Game” program.
