France aims to add over 4 mln fibre customers by 2012

French communications minister Francois Loos has announced the target of adding more than 4 million fibre optic broadband customers by 2012, vnunet.fr reports. This will allow the company to keep its lead on its European neighbours, with 11 million broadband customers. The rollout of 50 to 100 Mbps services will enable a number of interactive services, including multi-room HDTV, VoD and networked gaming. One of the government plan’s main measures is to incite local governments, the incumbent and alternative operators to lease cable conduits by the end of March 2007. Another issue is black fibre deployment in new homes and offices
