Globul with its retail partner Germanos will participate in in the ‘Earth Hour’ event to be held between 8.30 pm and 9.30 pm on March 26.

Earth Hour is a global event organized by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature, also known as World Wildlife Fund) and is held on the last Saturday of March annually, asking households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and other electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change.

In 2011, Globul and Germanos will be Earth Hour participants and ambassadors for the third year in a row. The two companies will turn off the electric lighting at their office buildings, at over 230 shops as well as at their major advertising facilities in Sofia, Varna and Burgas. Only the systems providing the seamless network operation and customer service will be left online. Globul supports this global initiative as part of its long-term environmental sustainability strategy dubbed ‘Globul Green’.

Southeastern Europe mobile operator Cosmote has reported second-quarter revenues up 31.6 percent from a year ago to EUR 540.7 million. EBITDA increased 13.5 percent to EUR 203.6 million, while net profit slipped 2.9 percent to EUR 81.5 million. Cosmote attributed the drop in net profit to higher depreciation and financing charges from expanding its operations, as well as losses from its recently re-launched Romanian operation, which had a net loss of EUR 26 million in the quarter. Cosmote said it expects to complete the earlier announced acquisition of telecom retailer Germanos in the fourth quarter.
