Digicel launches services in Panama

Digicel, the largest telecommunications operator in the Caribbean and recent entrant to the Central American market, today launched operations in Panama — its third Central American market and 31st market world-wide — with an investment of US$350 million. Digicel launches in British Virgin Islands, invests $17Mn

Digicel, the largest mobile operator in the Caribbean and new entrant to the Central American market, today launched services in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) — its 25th market in the Caribbean and Central America and 30th market world-wide. Voila launches voice SMS service in Haiti

Comcel, the GSM service provider under the brand name Voila claims to launch country’s first voice SMS service. Comcel has reportedly invested nearly $200Mn in Haiti till date.

Digicel posts 4Q revenue of USD347 million

In its fourth quarter ended 31 March 2007 Digicel recorded revenues of USD347 million for the group which exceeded the company’s USD312 million guidance. Fourth-quarter EBITDA was USD85 million, in line with the company’s USD83 million guidance.

At the end of March 2007 the Digicel group claimed 4.7 million subscribers; Haiti claimed 1.4 million subscribers (up from 1.13 million at the start of the year), Trinidad and Tobago had approximately 500,000 subscribers (484,000).

Special blend: Comcel and Alcatel-Lucent provide WiMAX to coffee co-ops

Alcatel-Lucent has signed a two-year cooperation agreement with Caf©s Malongo, the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis and Haitian mobile operator Comcel to offer broadband internet access to the rural area of Cap Rouge in Haiti. The pilot project ‘Tra§abilit© du Caf©’ (Coffee Traceability) will give coffee cooperatives internet access from their plantations via WiMAX and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technologies. The system will enable them to monitor the traceability of their ‘fair trade’ labelled products and sell their coffee on optimum terms by reducing the number of intermediaries. Alcatel-Lucent has undertaken to supply equipment free of charge, including a WiMAX station, and will help to set up and run the project, whilst Comcel has undertaken to bear all the connection costs for two years for three planned sites, and to operate the WiMAX station.

Digicel Passes 4 Million Subscriber Landmark

The pan-Caribbean operator, Digicel has announced its growth achievements in 2006. Achieving record growth in 2006, Digicel ended the year with a total investment in the Caribbean region exceeding US$1.5 billion, operations in 22 markets and more than 4 million customers, representing subscriber growth in excess of 100%.

In Haiti alone, where Digicel launched in May 2006, the company reached a milestone of one million customers after just eight months of operation.

“Digicel’s progress in 2006 reinforced our position as the largest GSM provider in the Caribbean region, with sustained growth in our existing markets and unrivaled growth through our entrance into new markets, such as Haiti, Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana and El Salvador,” said Colm Delves, Digicel Group CEO.

“2006 had several major achievements and milestones for Digicel” said Delves. “We look forward to 2007 and continuing our ambitious growth in key target markets.”

Digicel Haiti claims a million customers in eight months

Telegeography writes…Digicel Haiti, which launched in May last year and is part of the Digicel mobile group founded by Irish businessman Denis O’Brien, has announced that it ended 2006 with over a million GSM customers. Digicel says it has invested USD260 million in Haiti, which it claims is ‘the largest investment ever made in the country by an international company’. It has already raced ahead of its rivals, TDMA/GSM operator Comcel and CDMA provider Haitel, despite both companies responding to their new competitor by cutting prices and launching new networks. Comcel hurriedly rolled out a GSM network under the Voila brand in early 2006, whilst Haitel is aiming to sign up data users to its CDMA2000 1x services, launched in late August 2006 (source: TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database).

During 2006 Digicel Group launched services in additional Caribbean markets including Trinidad & Tobago, Turks & Caicos Islands and Bonaire, and acquired El Salvadorian mobile operator Digicel Holdings Ltd, U Mobile in Guyana, and Bouygues Telecom Caraibe, which extended its mobile footprint to Martinique, Guadeloupe and French Guiana. The group finished the year with over four million subscribers in 22 markets.

Telecompaper writes…GSM mobile operator Digicel ended 2006 with over 4 million customers across 22 markets in the Caribbean, up over 100 percent from 2005, with total investment in the region reaching over USD 1.5 billion by end-2006. It achieved 1 million customers in Haiti within eight months of launching services there in May 2006. Other new markets in the region in 2006 included Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana and El Salvador. The company has also entered the Central and South American markets.
