T-Mobile and Hutchison 3G enter network sharing agreement (Austria)
Mobile operators Hutchison 3G Austria and T-Mobile Austria have entered into a network sharing partnership enabling both operators to roam on each other’s network. According to company reports, the pact, starting in mid 2012, will enable T-Mobile to offer its customers in rural areas 3G services on 3′s network while at the same time providing 3 with access to T-Mobile’s 2G network.
Jan Trionow, CEO, 3, said that for their customers, nothing will change and they continue to enjoy all the benefits of super fast 3MegaNetzes, the best mobile network in Austria, and will in future benefit also from the already well-developed 2G network of their partner T-Mobile. Jan added that they will also parallel the expansion of their LTE network continued with determination.
Robert Chv¡tal, CEO, T-Mobile Austria, said that the mutual use of existing mobile networks for both partners is a win-win situation. He added that winners are ultimately all Austrian mobile customers, who benefit from quality improvements and synergies immediately.
VHA contracts NSN replacing Ericsson (Australia)
www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Vodafone Hutchison Australia (VHA) has signed a seven year deal with Nokia Siemens Networks as per which the latter will supply managed services and an integrated core network to the operator.
Existing VHA network vendor Ericsson has been pipped by NSN to clinch the 2G/3G deal and it also over taken over Chinese vendor Huawei, to win the contract. Flexi NG core platform will be supplied by NSN as per the contract and it will also provide service management for the core, transmission and radio networks.
Integration of networks and operations of Vodafone Australia and Hutchison 3G Australia is also required by the contract. The decision comes as huge blow to Ericsson which has been the major network supplier in Australia, as well as Vodafone’s 2G and regional 3G network vendor. Besides, it is also the sole vendor for Telstra’s 800MHz 3G network.
Hutchison 3G Austria modernizes its network for HSPA+ and LTE
Hutchison 3G Austria is modernizing its radio access network to be ready for HSPA+ and the next generation of mobile broadband, or LTE. At the same time this step will allow the operator to halve the energy consumption of its base stations. Nokia Siemens Networks will undertake this upgrade starting in autumn 2009.
The demand for increased mobile broadband capacity and throughput in Austria is reflected in the increasing usage of data cards and mobile services like Mobile TV, video download or video sharing,†said Berthold Thoma, CEO of Hutchison 3G Austria. Mobile broadband is also one of the most pragmatic solutions to bridging the digital gap between cities and rural areas. For rural areas, mobile broadband coverage is simply less expensive and faster to deploy than fiber to the home†solutions. We hope that with our nationwide coverage we will contribute significantly to this end.†(more…)
Twelve operators back low cost 3G handset project
The GSMA, the global trade association for mobile operators, has invited handset makers to submit proposals for a 3G mobile phone that can support advanced services, such as high-speed Internet browsing, mobile TV and instant messaging but costing significantly less than a low-end 3G handset today. Their proposals will be evaluated by the 12 operators – Cingular Wireless, Globe Telecom, Hutchison 3G, KTF, MTN, Orange, Smart, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, Telenor, T-Mobile and Vodafone.
The GSMA says it believes the endorsement of the 12 operators will help the winning handset vendor achieve the economies of scale in manufacturing, logistics and marketing necessary to make 3G phones much more affordable. However once the GSMA has selected a supplier the resulting ‘3G for All’ handset will be made available to all GSMA operators.
We want 3G handsets, offering access to a rich suite of services, to become the default choice for people buying a new phone,??? said Craig Ehrlich, chairman of the GSMA and a board member of Hutchison Mobile Communications, which is sponsoring the project.
Over the next few months, the 12 operators will evaluate and score the proposals submitted by handset vendors against a number of criteria: functionality, usability, logistics, market acceptance, target price, service and support, strategic commitment and form factor. The handset with the highest score will be endorsed as the official ‘3G for All’ phone by the GSMA. The winning handset will be announced at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona in February 2007.
