Hutchison 3G Austria is modernizing its radio access network to be ready for HSPA+ and the next generation of mobile broadband, or LTE. At the same time this step will allow the operator to halve the energy consumption of its base stations. Nokia Siemens Networks will undertake this upgrade starting in autumn 2009.

“The demand for increased mobile broadband capacity and throughput in Austria is reflected in the increasing usage of data cards and mobile services like Mobile TV, video download or video sharing,” said Berthold Thoma, CEO of Hutchison 3G Austria. “Mobile broadband is also one of the most pragmatic solutions to bridging the digital gap between cities and rural areas. For rural areas, mobile broadband coverage is simply less expensive and faster to deploy than “fiber to the home” solutions. We hope that with our nationwide coverage we will contribute significantly to this end.” (more…)

According to analysts, Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-shing’s conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. could post a sharp decline in net profit for the first half of the year due to lower gains from asset sales. Net income for the six months could have dropped more than 70 percent to HK$8.6 billion compared with HK$28.76 billion in the same period last year, according to a forecast. Hutchison Whampoa’s earnings were helped by a disposable gain of $4.6 billion, booked after its telecom unit, Hutchison Telecommunications International Ltd., sold off Indian mobile phone assets, a year ago.
It is expected that Cheung Kong is going to post earnings of around $798 million in the first half. This symbolizes a steep fall from the year-ago period, when the company recorded HK$18.54 billion in profit. With the Hong Kong’s market, shares of both th companies have fallen down, Hutchinson down more than 20% and Cheung Kong off over 29%.

Indonesia’s Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU) has announced it is widening its probe into alleged price-fixing of SMS messages by eight of the country’s mobile operators, The Jakarta Post reports. In a statement the body said it had found evidence, albeit preliminary, of a ‘cartel-like’ arrangement between the companies involved. ‘From the preliminary evidence, we have discovered that there’s a kind of agreement between the mobile cellular companies to fix the prices of text messages at between IDR250 (about USD0.027) and IDR350,’ KPPU chairman Muhammad Iqbal said Monday. He went on to say it would take about 60 working days for the KPPU to finally make its adjudication on the case. The eight companies allegedly involved are Bakrie Telecom, Indosat, Telkomsel, Telkom, Excelcomindo, Hutchinson CP Telecommunications (HCPT), Mobile-8 Telecom and Smart Telecom.
