Sprint has outlined plans for its migration of its Push-to-Talk services over to its CDMA network. The Sprint Direct Connect will launch with an initial portfolio of rugged devices from Motorola Mobility and Kyocera. The devices will feature most of the capabilities available on current Sprint Nextel iDEN based phones. The planned portfolio will include an ultra-rugged camera flip phone and an Android Smartphone with a touch screen and a QWERTY keyboard.

Sprint expects to deepen its push-to-talk portfolio by 2012, adding more devices with new form factors and features.

The devices are expected to enable group push-to-talk for up to 200 participants, Land Mobile Radio (LMR) interoperability, and availability notification. In early 2012, Sprint Direct Connect is expected to add more capabilities, including international push-to-talk.

In addition, the Push-to-talk coverage footprint is planned to increase to nearly 2.7 million square miles and is expected to cover a population of 309 million (with the addition of 1xrtt and roaming coverage) – an increase from the iDEN network’s 908,370 square miles covering a population 278 million.

During the nationwide implementation of Network Vision, Sprint expects to continue operating the iDEN network at current performance levels. As the customer base shifts to more broadband-centric push-to-talk applications on the CDMA network and Sprint launches Sprint Direct Connect, iDEN cell sites are expected to be phased out in 2013.

According to Paget Alves, President-Sprint Business, their customers are asking for broadband push-to-talk now. They’ve seen steadily increasing demand for faster data speeds, better and broader coverage, and more applications on push-to-talk devices. Sprint Direct Connect is designed to solve for all three, and is expected to come with sub-second push-to-talk call set-up time initially in Sprint CDMA RevA coverage areas. Sub-second call set up is expected to expand across the U.S. with the implementation of Network Vision.

Alves added, they believe the new push-to-talk service powered by a broadband network and featuring competitively priced rugged handsets and smart phones will represent an unmatched offering in the market.

Nokia Siemens Networks stated that it has no interest in trade secrets by Chinese rival Huawei Technology.

Privately-held Huawei took legal action this week to delay the sale of certain assets from Motorola to Nokia Siemens. Motorola is reported to have sold Huawei equipment since 2000 and the Chinese company claims that the deal would transfer its technology to one of its largest competitors.

According to Michael Matthews, head of NSN’s strategy and business development, the company has absolutely no interest in Huawei’s trade secrets. They don’t need that information, they don’t want it, and they fully respect the intellectual property rights of others.

He noted that the reason for buying Motorola’s network assets was to boost the company’s customer base, especially in the USA and Japan and to improve its technology platforms in the CDMA areas. The company’s original reasons remain their motivation: this is about expanding the base of customers that they can bring value to.

Although Huawei has secured a temporary delay in the transaction in the USA, the company is currently facing a more serious delay with the Chinese regulators which could push the deal completion into the second quarter of the year.

Last July, NSN had announced that it would be paying US$1.2 billion for the majority of Motorola’s wireless network infrastructure assets. Approximately 7,500 employees are expected to transfer to Nokia Siemens Networks from Motorola’s wireless network infrastructure business when the transaction closes, including large research and development sites in the United States, China and India.

Motorola is keeping its iDEN business, substantially all the patents related to its wireless network infrastructure business and other selected assets.

Nokia Siemens Networks has announced that it now expects to complete its acquisition of the majority of Motorola’s public carrier wireless network infrastructure assets in the first quarter of 2011.

The company had expected, at the time the transaction was originally announced in July, to complete closing activities by the end of 2010 but the transaction has not yet received regulatory approval from the Anti-Monopoly Bureau of the Ministry of Commerce of China, which is continuing its review process. All other necessary regulatory clearances have been obtained.

Nokia Siemens Networks is paying US$1.2 billion to buy the majority of Motorola’s wireless network infrastructure assets, excepting the iDEN business.

According to Rajeev Suri, Chief Executive Officer of Nokia Siemens Networks, this delay is disappointing, but they are looking forward to completing the acquisition early in the New Year. The company is continuing to work closely with the authority in China to finalize the clearance process in that country. They recognize its efforts in addressing this case as a matter of importance.

Approximately 7,500 employees are expected to transfer to Nokia Siemens Networks from Motorola’s public carrier wireless network infrastructure business when the transaction closes, including large research and development sites in the United States, China and India.

Sprint Nextel has confirmed that it will continue to buy iDEN services from Motorola for at least the next three years. The company lately announced that it will be planning, migrating its iDEN subscribers over to an upgraded CDMA network, but the timeline for the migration is a lengthy one.

The new agreement will formally extend Sprint and Motorola Solutions’ contractual iDEN relationship through 2013 and covers the supply of software and services.

According to Mike Fox, General Manager, iDEN Products and Solutions, Motorola Solutions, Motorola has been a proud partner with Sprint in delivering the industry’s best PTT service for more than 17 years. They are pleased to continue partnering with Sprint to support their iDEN network through 2013, and they are equally excited about the launch of additional iDEN devices for Sprint PTT customers.

Sprint has also announced that several new iDEN handsets will be available in the first quarter of 2011.

According to Mark Shockley, Senior Vice President, Motorola Mobility, in line with Motorola Solutions’ ongoing support of the iDEN network, Motorola Mobility is committed to working with Sprint. They look forward to bringing exciting new devices to market, including compelling next-generation push-to-talk solutions in the coming year.
