Inwi introduces instant messaging service with Gemalto (Morocca)
Gemalto has announced that Moroccan operator Inwi has launched LinqUs SIMessenger, a mobile instant messaging service with the company.
Gemalto’s LinqUs SIMessenger enables mobile chatting through any handset. LinqUs SIMessenger offers an intuitive menu that allows subscribers to access their Windows Live Messenger environment with an experience similar to what they get when accessing it from a PC.
Inwi has already surpassed the 250,000 milestone for passes sold every month since the commercial launch of the messaging service in February 2010.
No plans to acquire Tencent, says China Mobile
www.WirelessFederation.com/news: China Mobile Ltd, the world’s largest mobile carrier by subscribers has denied any plans of acquiring Tecent Holdings Ltd. According to their spokesperson, Rainie Lei, the recent media reports on China Mobile talking with Tencent were groundless.
The statement was made after a local internet portal cited that China mobile’s delegation led by company’s president Wang Jianzhou visited Tencent headquarters and the two sides held a discussion over the potential acquisition.
Tencent was established a decade ago and it led China’s instant messaging market with its average daily users crossing 137.5 million, informed the official Xinhua Agency in November.
In 2006, China Mobile launched its own instant messaging service, Fetion, in order to attract more subscribers to increase its revenue.
The ranking of Fetion scored to number three among instant message programs after Tencent and Microsoft Corp.’s MSN by the end of September according to a report.
Mobile instant messaging to hit markets soon
Forget short messaging and think instant messaging. Cellular operators in India are making plans to set up a central hub that will enable the 100-million GSM mobile subscribers to use an interoperable instant messaging service.
At present, subscribers use messenger services like those provided by Yahoo or MSN, which enables them to remain connected to their contacts within the same network. The new product being developed globally by GSM Association will enable all cellular users irrespective of the operator or the platform, to remain connected.
The mobile operators are aiming to have achieved interoperability at a technical level by February 2007. Mr Manoj Kohli, President, Bharti Airtel, “We in Bharti Airtel are greatly excited about the potential for Mobile IM in India. We are actively participating in the COAI’s special committee on IM, which comprises all Indian GSM operators, and is working for an interconnect hub solution to ensure seamless IM interoperability between all mobile networks. Our common goal is to launch mobile IM in India by early 2007.”
In Malaysia, all three GSM operators, Celcom, DiGi Telecommunications and Maxis, have agreed to launch interoperable IM services during 2007, while M1, SingTel Mobile and StarHub in Singapore will start to plan the development of interoperable IM services.
“The IM services in India, Malaysia and Singapore will all be based on a technical and commercial framework designed by the GSMA to maximise ease-of-use, interoperability and reliability, while minimising spam and viruses,” said Mr Rob Conway, CEO, GSMA.
