Samsung wins appeal against Apple in Australia (South Korea, USA)
Samsung Electronics emerged victorious against rival Apple Inc., as the federal court reversed its decision to ban the sale of Samsung’s Galaxy Tabs in Australia. According to reports, the court had granted Apple an injunction against Samsung in October, preventing any sale of the Galaxy 10.1 tab in Australia, over a patent infringement dispute.
Apple had alleged that Samsung’s Tab had infringed on its patents regarding touch screen technology and design imitation. Following this, Samsung had counter-sued the iPhone maker claiming patent infringement on wireless transmission in multiple devices.
As per sources, analysts believe that the decision has come at a right time, enabling Samsung to take advantage of the festive season; however, it is still not certain as to how soon Samsung can resume sales. Further, it has been reported that Apple will have to approach the High Court should it choose to extend the injunction.
Android smartphones account for 52.5 percent of the global mobile market in Q3
Google’s Android mobile software powered more than half of all smartphones sold across the world in the third quarter of 2011, doubling its market share as compared to last year, according to a research report by Gartner. The research giant said that smartphone sales by volume grew 42 percent even as some consumers delayed purchases in anticipation of Apple’s latest iPhone.
Roberta Cozza, analyst in Gartner’s European unit has said that Android benefited from more mass-market offerings, a weaker competitive environment, and the lack of exciting new products on alternative operating systems. According to the report, the global mobile handset sales during the third quarter totaled 440.5 million units, with smartphone sales reaching 115 million, representing a quarter-over-quarter increase of 7 percent and year-over-year increase of 42 percent.
Android smartphones led the way with sales of 60 million, up from the 20 million units sold last year, while Apple reported unit sales of 17 million, up from 13 million in the past year. Symbian based phones saw the biggest decline with sales falling to 19 million from 29 million in the past year resulting in its market share declining from 36.3 percent to 16.9 percent.
The report reveals that smartphone sales reached 115 million units in the third quarter of 2011, up 42 percent from the same period in 2010. Further, smartphone sales accounted for 26 percent of all mobile phone sales, gaining only a marginal one percent in the previous quarter.
Cozza also states that the strong smartphone growth in China and Russia helped increase overall volumes in the quarter, but demand for smartphones stalled in advanced markets such as Western Europe and the U.S. as many users waited for new flagship devices featuring new versions of the key operating systems. She added that slowdowns also occurred in Latin America and the Middle East and Africa.
Further, Ms. Cozza also said that some consumers held off upgrading in the third quarter because they were waiting for promotions on other new high-end models that were launched in the run-up to the fourth quarter holiday season, while other consumers were waiting for a rumored new iPhone and associated price cuts on older iPhone models which affected U.S. sales particularly.

Steve Jobs: Few unknown facts about the legendary genius
Steve Jobs –known to all as a charismatic pioneer, an inventor and a businessman. However, few knew the person behind Apple’s most innovative products. In his biography, titled ‘Steve Jobs’, author Walter Isaacson tells the world some unknown facts about the legendary genius.
Jobs was particular about the little details in life, not just while designing the iPhones and the iPads, but also for his personal health. He refused to use deodorant claiming that his vegan diet would naturally clear up any body odour that may arise. It was this stubborn attitude that eventually hurt him as he refused to undergo any operation to treat his then curable tumour, saying that he did not want his body affected by surgery. Further, at the time when doctors suggested he have more protein in his diet, he would fast or eat a minimum quantity of fruits.
A romantic at heart, Jobs was not the best at showing his affection. Isaacson talks about an instance when Jobs was dating folk singer Joan Baez and kept telling her about a Ralph Lauren dress she would look great in. However, the evening that he actually took her to the store for the dress, he landed up buying a few shirts for himself and suggested that she buy the dress herself.
Jobs attention to detail was well known, however, some believed he was obsessive compulsive. He was known to drive employees crazy if a few frames were removed from an ad or over the thickness of line in a calculator widget. He had as many as 100 black turtlenecks in his wardrobe from the same designer, and sported the same look at all public events. Isaacson reveals that when Steve Jobs was undergoing liver transplant, he demanded that the doctors bring him five different models of the oxygen mask to test.
Jobs had his own philosophy about managing employees. He believed that yelling and badmouthing the employees, often seven days a week and sometimes even late into the night, helped extract the best performance from the staff. While some employees believed he could have achieved the desired results by being a bit nicer, others claimed that this inspired them to do some of the best work of their careers. The book also mentions several instanced of Jobs tearing up. He would often start crying if he didn’t get his way with the product design or corporate organization. He would also tear up when he was happy and when he encountered what he considered to be the purity of spirit.
An inventor, Jobs was always looking to create and design newer things. Even when he was unwell, he would work on designing a sea-vessel, which is said to be very minimalist but at the same time very tastefully done. Given up for adoption to the Jobs family by his birth parents, Steve Jobs never responded to his birth father’s (Abdulfattah Jandali) request for a proper meeting.
Even with some of these facts being known to the world, Steve Jobs still continues to remain a mystery. His inventions revolutionized the way a user would operate a computer or a mobile phone. A legend and a genius, Steve Jobs is not a name that will be forgotten for a long time.
Verizon profit doubles in Q3 with rise in smartphones (USA)
Verizon Communications, America’s second largest network carrier, has reported double profits in their third-quarter results due to the increase in the number of users using smartphones. As per company reports, the net income rose from $659 million (23 cents a share) in 2010 to $1.38 billion (49 cents a share) in the quarter ended September. Industry sources believe that Verizon’s new services offered on the company’s higher speed long-term evolution (LTE) network has helped Verizon increase its subscriber base, offering it a competitive edge over other carriers.
As per sources, Verizon Wireless added over 850,000 postpaid subscribers this quarter while rival carrier AT&T, which will be starting LTE services this year, added over 300,000 postpaid subscribers in the last quarter. Reports suggest that Verizon sold 5.6 million smartphones this quarter of which 1.4 million were LTE devices. Further, Verizon reportedly sold 2 million iPhones as compared to the 2.7 million iPhones sold by AT&T during the same period.
Sprint to impose cap on unlimited plans for mobile dongles and hotspots (USA)
Sprint, the third largest carrier in the United States, has announced that they will be ending their unlimited data plans for mobile broadband dongles and mobile hotspot add-on services. As per reports, a cap of 5GB will be imposed in the case of mobile hotspot users and either 3GB, 5GB or 10GB for mobile broadband subscribers.
Company sources have reportedly said that customers using a mobile broadband device such as a tablet, netbook, notebook, USB card, connection card or Mobile Hotspot device, will no longer enjoy unlimited 4G from next month. However, there will not be any changes to the monthly recurring charges, on-network overage rates, off-network overage rate, or off-network data allowance.
Industry analysts believe that as the modem plans consume much more data than smartphones, they were the first to face changes on their unlimited plans, and that Sprint may apply a similar cap on smartphone data usage as well. However, as yet the company has reportedly said that it has no plans to change the unlimited services offered on the iPhone and other handsets.
Nokia’s new $6,800 diamond encrusted phone
At the time mobile phones were introduced to consumers, there was one name that was dominant across regions – Nokia. Recently though, with players like Apple and Samsung bringing in new technology, users have shifted their allegiance to other manufacturers, causing Nokia to lose some of its market share. However, the luxury division of Nokia ‘Vertu’ is still going strong and has as much as 60% of the European market in its grip.
While all iPhone fans are awaiting the launch of Apples’s new handset next week, Vertu has captured the attention of the luxury phone users, with its latest handset complete with a diamond encrusted QWERTY keypad. The phone, priced at $6,800 has a gold frame, a diamond encrusted case and keys made of precious stones. While the handsets of the luxury segment have been accused of not being the most updated in terms of technology, Nokia’s latest handset boasts of a better operating system and a higher resolution built-in camera.
According to reports, services chief, Mark Izatt, says that a big draw for old and new Vertu customers is the company’s concierge function, provided free to the users for the first year and charged at about $3,000 annually thereafter. This function gives users a 24 hour access to the hotline staff, who speak nine languages including Chinese, Russian and Arabic, and take care of user requests such as restaurant reservations and travel planning, along with some exquisite requests like sending a box of live butterflies as an anniversary gift.
T-Mobile expected to lose three times its contract subscribers this year (USA)
T-Mobile USA, the fourth-largest wireless carrier in the US, may reportedly lose as many as three times the number of contract subscribers this year as compared to 2010. With the Justice Department of USA refusing to AT&T’s proposed merger with T-mobile, the company has been unable to cut prices, one of T-mobile’s most important features to attract customers.
Sources claim that the number of customers on monthly contracts is expected to fall by about 1.2 million as compared to 390,000 last year, thereby bringing the company’s contract subscribers to a total of 25.2 million by the year end. Analysts and industry insiders claim that a significant reason for the reduction of T-Mobile’s market share is due to the fact that it has been unable to use the drastic price cuts as adopted previously. T-mobile has been known to offer promotions such as 1000 minutes at $40 a month and days when a phone was given free with every new contract. Further, with Sprint also joining the list of operators offering the iPhone in the USA, T-Mobile is the only major operator in the USA which does not offer its subscribers such an option.
However, even though contract subscribers are expected to reduce, analysts believe that the number of prepaid subscribers for T-Mobile is expected to go up especially in lieu of their offers regarding unlimited text messaging and web access.
