www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Nokia Siemens Networks has been strongly criticized by the ¬European politicians for shipping telecoms monitoring equipment to the Iranian government. EU institutions have immediately called on the European Parliament to “ban the export of surveillance technology by European companies to governments and countries such as Iran”.

Last year, it was reported that NSN supplied the equipment that was being used to monitor protests against the re-election of President Ahmadinejad.

According to the company, although it had provided Lawful Intercept capability solely for the monitoring of local voice calls in Iran, it had not provided any deep packet inspection, web censorship or Internet filtering capability to Iran.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Government’s plan to increase taxes on mobile phone services has been severely criticized by the wireless network operators in Jordan. Currently, the tax paid by the telecom industry is equivalent to 58% of its revenue to the government. The latest tax is an increase in the special cellular phone tax from 4% to 8%.

16% in sales taxes, 24% income tax on profits and 10% on their total revenues is paid by the operators in total along with a newly raised special phone tax of 8%. According to Raslan Diranieh, chief financial officer of the Jordan Telecom Group, the increase in the tax will certainly have a negative impact on the telecom sector and whenever the government wants to increase tax, it thinks of the telecom sector because it is faster and easier to collect the tax, and there are zero efforts involved in the process.

Rival Zain also considers the government’s decision to be shocking and negative. The government on the other hand explains that in light of the current difficult economic situations it is best for all to direct their spending towards essential items rather than luxury items.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Qualcomm Incorporated stated today that while it is pleased with the Korea Fair Trade Commission’s (KFTC) findings of no violation with regard to much of the complaint brought by the Case Examiner, it firmly disagrees with the KFTC decision that certain discounts and rebates it provides to its Korean customers on the purchase of its CDMA chipsets are in violation of Korean competition law.  The decision by the KFTC includes a corrective order relating to the specific practices at issue and an administrative fine of approximately $200 million, however there is no indication of how this figure was calculated other than a reference to Qualcomm’s significant Korean revenue.  Additional details regarding this decision, including how the KFTC calculated the fine, will not be available until issued by the KFTC in the form of a written decision and order which may take several months.  Qualcomm maintains that the findings of violations are based upon serious factual and legal errors, and that the Company’s practices are lawful, appropriate and pro-competitive.  Qualcomm also believes that the fine is excessive and unwarranted.  Qualcomm will appeal the decision to the Korean courts and continue vigorously to defend itself against the claims of unlawful conduct.
