www.WirelessFederation.com/news: License to the third mobile operator of the country, state-owned Tamin Telecom, has been granted by Iranian government. Tamin Telecom along with its consortium got the license in April 24.  Availability of the SIM cards is expected in the market in the course of the current year.

Other winning companies of the consortium have still not been revealed. Consortium of Tamin and Etisalat were initially granted the license in January 2009 but was later withdrawn. Zain group received the license in May but that deal fell apart when it was said by Iran that Zain had not fulfilled its obligations, and launched a new tender.

MTN launches in Iran

The MTN Group has launched operations in Iran following successful purchase of 49% shares in Irancell.
MTN Irancell’s coverage extends to Tehran, Mashhad and Tabriz, with Sari and Karaj expected to be available within the next two weeks.
The network will expand to more than 70 cities by March 2007.
A statement said on October 21, MTN Irancell released 350,000 SIM cards into the market and one million subscribers are expected by the end of December.
Unlike current services, MTN Irancell subscribers will benefit from mobile telecommunication that is available immediately upon purchase of a SIM card.  Products have been made available at over 200 stores in Tehran, Tabriz and Mashhad, and the distribution network will increase to 7,000 national points of presence by December.
MTN Group’s president and chief executive, Phuthuma Nhleko, said, MTN is pleased to provide a quality cellular network service to the people of Iran. Economic fundamentals support Iranian mobile market potential and we are confident we will reach our subscriber target by the end of this financial year.???
