www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Per-second billing will be introduced in South Korea by telecom operator KT Corp from December 2010. Earlier, similar service was announced by another telco SK Telecom. It has been claimed by KT Corp that change will enable savings for individuals of up to KRW8,000 (USD7.14) per year and expected the total annual savings to reach KRW128 billion.

The announcement for this kind of move was made by SKT in February 2010 and it was claimed at that time also that the move would save its subscribers up to KRW16.8 billion each month.

Till recently, the high cost of mobile services has been an area of concern for telecoms regulator the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) and its focus has been paid off the latest move by both KT and SKT to introduce the new strategy.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: The investments in WiBro services has been planned to be expanded by South Korean communications firms SK Telecom and KT plan. KRW 140 billion this year and KRW 160 billion in 2011 will be invested by SK Telecom while KT has also increased its WiBro investment plan to KRW 1.2 trillion, from an earlier projection of KRW 1.1 trillion by the end of 2011.

The announcement follows a previous announcement by KCC that would give spectrum in the 800/900 MHz band to the company that allocates a bigger budget for WiBro.

At present, WiBro is only available in and around capital Seoul and a few other cities

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Choi See-joong, the Chairman of South Korean regulator, has reportedly asked mobile operators to lower call charges on the back of an OECD report highlighting the country as one of the world’s most expensive for mobile phone use .

As per his recommendations, a similar pledge by South Korean President Lee Myung-bak to cut mobile rates by 20%. The regulator is considering a variety of methods to force rate reductions, including the banning of handset subsidies to promote cheaper call rates, expanding pre-paid tariffs and most notably allowing the introduction of mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs). However, all three telcos are not in favour of this. SK Telecom has claimed that government interference could have a negative effect on competitiveness in the wireless sector.
