Korean handset manufacturer, Samsung has accepted to pay Microsoft royalties for every Android based smartphone and tablet sold. Microsoft had accused Google’s Android of violating its patents. However, Google has responded saying that they remain focused on building new technology and supporting Android partners.

As per reports, Microsoft has said that under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will receive royalties for Samsung’s mobile phones and tablets running on the Android mobile platform. In addition, the companies agreed to cooperate in the development and marketing of Windows Phone. Andy Lees, President, Microsoft’s Windows Phone division said that Microsoft and Samsung see the opportunity for dramatic growth in Windows Phone and are investing to make that a reality.

According to reports, Dr. Won-Pyo Hong, Executive Vice President of Global product Strategy at Samsung’s mobile communication division has said that through the cross-licensing of their respective patent portfolios, Samsung and Microsoft can continue to bring the latest innovations to the mobile industry. Ha added that they were pleased to build upon their long history of working together to open a new chapter of collaboration beginning with their Windows Phone ‘Mango’ launch this fall.

SK Telecom, a competitive player in the telecoms industry, introduced Long Term Evolution (LTE) smartphone-Galaxy S II LTE and LTE-dedicated price plans for the first time in Korea. Galaxy S II LTE is a smartphone by Samsung Electronics which reportedly offers a wide range of SK Telecom’s LTE services such as high-definition multimedia service, video call service and multiplayer networking games.

The company aims to offer the complete range of 4G LTE services with the addition of the Galaxy S II, in an attempt to increase the speed with which LTE will be adopted in the market. Further, as per reports, SK Telecom plans to release seven different LTE smartphone models by the end of the year.

Jang Dong-Hyun, Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) of SK Telecom has reportedly said that SK Telecom has been leading innovations in the field of LTE since it commercialized Korea’s first LTE service in July 2011. Looking ahead, SK Telecom will provide differentiated, premium LTE services based on its unmatched competitiveness in call quality, device lineup and service/content, while at the same time making strenuous efforts to further expand and enhance the LTE-based mobile ecosystem.

If reports are to be believed, SK Telecom has decided to spin off its platform business, which includes mobile content and applications.

SK Telecom, last week stated that it was considering spinning off its platform operation, had no immediate comment.

According to the reports, the decision was made to improve management efficiency.

LG Uplus speeds up LTE plans (Korea)

LG Uplus, Korea’s communications provider has accelerated its plans to launch LTE in the country. The company is now planning to provide LTE services in 82 cities around Korea before the end of this year.

The company is also planning to complete the nationwide LTE network in July next year. Originally, LG Uplus had planned to roll out the service nationwide from 2013.

LG Uplus is hoping that that the LTE service will help it gain back market share and will invest KRW 1.25 trillion in the service over two years.

SK Telecom, which operates in South Korea, is planning to enter overseas markets with its app store.

According to the company’s officials, it will be setting up its T-Store in China in July on China Mobile’s Mobile Market.

SK Telecom has also signed a contract with China Mobile to team up on promoting mobile content exchanges.

According to Lee Joo-sik, executive vice president and head of the new app store business division at the company, SKT’s partnership with China Mobile will become an opportunity to accelerate global expansion of the T-Store platform.

Additionally, the company will enter Japan in September with the launch of a localized version of the T-Store, tentatively dubbed ‘J-Store’. SK Telecom is in talks with Japanese handset makers and content providers for marketing and operating the J-Store.

The Korea Communications Commission (KCC) will be establishing a task force for mobile VoIP policies. The task force will include KT, SK Telecom, and LG Uplus as well as content providers such as Daum and Cacau Talk representatives.

Industry organizations like KISDI and ETRI will also participate in the event. The task force will review a number of policy aspects for mobile VoIP services as the regulator aims to frame a policy for the service by the Q3.

KCC (Korea Communications Commission) has confirmed a single standard for the keypad arrangement for Korean (Hangeul) for multimedia phones and multiple standards for smartphones.

Presently, handset makers all employ their own arrangements of Korean characters on keypads for fear of violating each other’s copyright. But now they have agreed to licence the arrangements free of charge to each other to promote a standard.

The standards are still being measured by the Communications Standards Committee and the National Standards Committee for final performance of a national standard in early June.

KT, Korea’s mobile operator has introduced two new Wibro ‘Egg’ Wibro/Wi-Fi router devices, the Case-type Egg for iPhone 4 and the Mini Egg.

The Wibro Egg devices change Wibro signals into Wi-Fi for mobile phones, notebooks, and tablet PCs. The Case-type Egg (KWF-B2500) can be used as a case for the iPhone 4, enabling the device to access Wibro services.

KT Fixed Line and Wireless Network Institute and Info Mark have developed the devices. The Mini Egg (KM-MR100) is about the size of a real egg and 60% the size of the existing egg device.

The Case-type Egg and Mini Egg are priced at US$120 and are offered for free on a 12-month Wibro contract.

KCC, Korea’s telecommunications watchdog has launched new support measures for MVNOs.

KCC has announced that SK Telecom will provide MVNOs with mobile phones until June 2012 and the company will also offer support to MVNOs which plan to launch services from July, offering fifteen value-added services.

MVNO partners, like SK Telecom, will also assist in establishing the necessary facilities for new players, who will have until the end of 2012 to pay off all costs.

The new measures are the outcome of a MVNO taskforce established by the KCC in April.

Juniper Networks has inked an agreement which will enable South Korean operator KT to secure the mobile life of their corporate customers via the Junos Pulse and the Junos Pulse Mobile Security Suite.

KT will market the service directly through established sales channels, and its established partnerships. Junos Pulse will provide KT’s customers a secure service for organisations to manage consistent security and user experience across a variety of devices, users and locations.

With Junos Pulse Mobile Security Suite, KT can provide their customers anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-spam, loss and theft protection, parental controls, and monitoring and control services purpose built for smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices.

KT users will also be able to remotely backup and restore data, locate and track a mobile device in the event it is lost or stolen, remotely lock and wipe it, activate an alarm, and can send an alert when a Sim card has been removed, swapped or replaced.
