A leading European airline, Lufthansa has announced the launch of MemberScout, the air travel industry’s first real-time location-based social networking solution for frequent flyers. The application which is available as an iPhone and is soon also going to be a Blackberry application, enables its users to instantly swap, share or exchange knowledge and ideas.

MemberScout was developed by mobile apps developer match2blue, using the Apama Business Event Processing (BEP) platform from Progress Software Corporation. It provides instant information exchange through which participants offer their subordinates, help and advice by asking questions and providing information related to destinations and travel.

According to the Head of Social Media of Lufthans, Dr Torsten Wingenter, it is a company’s effort to help the business community that flies with them to gain benefits of being in that community, wherever and whenever they need to.

The company’s vision is to help frequent flyers connect with each other to benefit from peer group advice.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: The mobile users can now enjoy both incoming and outgoing calls even when they are on a flight.  International in-flight roaming service has been introduced by GO in partnership with Aeromobile.
The service will be provided to customers on certain flights operated by various leading airlines like Emirates Airlines, Lufthansa German Airlines, Qantas Airways and Saudi Arabian Airlines.

As soon as the aircraft reaches a cruising altitude, GO customers can start using their mobiles and the information will be given by in-flight staff that they can use their mobile.

For in-flight roaming, it is necessary that an aircraft is installed with a mobile phone transmitter in order to activate the service and relay calls to and from mobile phones. Calls are then routed by satellites that in turn route the calls to and from terrestial networks thus connecting the mobile calls to telecom networks on ground.

This will allow GO customers to be connected at certain times while flying with the above mentioned airlines. Though, the incoming and outgoing voice calls and SMS are available to the post-paid mobile customers, outgoing voice calls for GO mobile pre-paid customers are not as yet available. Also the service lies on the discretion of the airlines themselves and GO mobile is in no way responsible for the level of service.
