Mobile phone usage growing fast in Pakistan

Islamabad, Oct 13 (Xinhua) Mobile phone users in Pakistan are growing fast with 41.5 million subscribers by the end of September 2006, out of the total population of 160 million, according to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

The PTA said Thursday the number of mobile users was 34 million by the end of last fiscal year 2005-06 ending on June 30, 2006.

According to PTA, during the first quarter of fiscal 2006-07 starting from July 1, 2006, Pakistan saw almost seven million fresh mobile customers.

Pakistan’s telecommunication sector is growing fast and has received $1,905 million foreign direct investment (FDI) in the year 2005-06 ending on June 30, 2006.

Officials said the country had a 25 percent mobile density rate by September 2006.
