Nokia rules Taiwan’s 3G market

Nokia has secured up to USD 468 million worth of contracts for third-generation (3G) network equipment and its enhancement model in Taiwan, this includes the USD 93 million contract it recently won from Chunghwa Telecom. Nokia becomes the top supplier of these equipments in Taiwan with the contract value exceeding over 50 per cent of the Taiwan market, say Nokia Taiwan’s executives.

Nokia recently bagged a turnkey network contract from Chunghwa to expand its wide code division multiple access (WCDMA) and high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) network coverage. The deal also paves the way for smooth network evolution. As per the agreement, Nokia will deploy WCDMA 3G radio and core networks alongwith providing turnkey services like network planning, other support services, deployment, etc. Nokia is scheduled to complete the expansion by June next year. For Nokia, this contract is the 41st of its kind across the world. Chunghwa, currently Taiwan’s number one telecom carrier, leads in deploying HSPDA network, the next enhancement to 3G, among domestic telecom firms. Sources close to Chunghwa’s 3G plans point out that the carrier would jump into the 3.5G sector by using Nokia’s software.

While Ericsson is the leader in Taiwan’s 2G equipment market, Nokia outperforms it in the 3G space. Nokia has won contracts from Chunghwa, Taiwan Mobile and Far EasTone’s southern Taiwan operation. International network providers would focus their competition in Taiwan on contracts for 3G and 3.5G equipment since 2G networks are already fully deployed. Nokia also signed a USD 150 million contract to expand GSM and GPRS networks for Henan Mobile in China’s Henan province. In addition, it has also signed a USD 30 million contract to supply a High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) network to mobile and IDD service provider MobileOne in Singapore.
