Moldcell lowers international call rates by 90 per cent (Moldova)

Mobile network operator Moldcell is enabling users to call abroad with a 90 per cent discount, which means that they can talk to their loved ones who are abroad at the price of national calls.

Users are required to send a blank SMS to the number 2226 or dial from *222*6#ok and activate the option Local tariff for international calls (priced at US$ 0.85) for a 30-day period. As soon as one activates the service, they can talk at the price of only US$ 0.13 per minute.

The countries users can call to using preferential tariffs (calls to mobile or fixed line) are: China, Cyprus, Kazakhstan, Russia, Singapore and Uzbekistan. The countries users can call to using preferential tariffs (fixed line) are: Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Switzerland, Finland, France, Georgia, Germane, Greece, Jordan, Iraq, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, Norway, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, Turkey, Ukraine, and Hungary.

If the subscriber has a discount and additional options, the priority in the option use will be the following: discounts, service packages, local tariff for international calls, normal tariff. The offer is not valid for IP – calls, calls to the numbers with special tariff, and if the subscriber is in Roaming. In case of migration from one type of subscription to another, the validity period and the conditions of the offer will be preserved. In case of migration from Cartel? Moldcell to Abonament Moldcell and vice versa the conditions of the offer will not be preserved, as well as in case if the Subsciption Contract is re-registered for another person. The option can be activated till April 30, 2012.

Tele2 looks for acquisition opportunities in Central Asia to compete with TeliaSonera (Europe)

Sweden based telecom firm, Tele2 is reportedly looking for acquisition opportunities in Central Asia, in an attempt to better compete with rival operator TeliaSonera. According to reports, Tele2 had acquired a majority stake in Kazakhstan’s wireless operator NEO, in March 2010.

As per sources, Lars Nilsson, CFO, Tele2 has said that countries in the vicinity of Kazakhstan can always be of interest as long as the market is not too small. He added that the target markets need at least 1 million potential customers for Tele2 to make an investment worthwhile. Further, reports suggest that Tele2 has more than 1 million Kazakh customers and expects to reach as many as 2.5 million by the end of 2012.

TeliaSonera currently operates in the regions of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. As per reports, it is looking to increase its stake in partially owned companies and is currently investing more in Kcell.

Sources claim that Telenor has been focusing on India and regions in Southeast Asia for opportunities in the emerging markets. According to reports, Richard Olav Aa, CFO, Telenor said that he expects Indian authorities to create more transparent rules for mergers and acquisitions within the next three years, and the company would be able to engage in mergers if it meets its 2013 breakeven goal.

 

Roadmap for mobile number portability implementation put in place (Moldova)

The telecoms regulator of Moldova has put in place, plans for ushering in mobile number portability in the country. The plan outlines number portability implementation for mobile telephone networks prior to the end of 2012 while it is end of 2011, for fixed line telephone networks.

The highlights of the plan entails the objectives, due actions, stages, terms and persons in charge of implementation, the expected results, procedures of reporting and evaluation of the number portability implementation.

Three stages have been defined for the implementation of number portability:

The first stage will kick off in 2011 during which the Agency intends to develop the due normative framework: The Regulations on number portability in the Republic of Moldova and the Procedure for Organizing and Holding a tender, principles and criteria of selecting (an) entity/ies to create and/or administer the centralized data base for the implementation of number portability in fixed and mobile networks.

The second stage will follow in 2012 when the primary focus would rest in facilitating the creation of the centralized data base for mobile networks, modification and testing of mobile networks, launch of mobile number portability.

While the third stage is slated for 2013 that will entail analogous projects with respect to fixed telephone networks. As per the outline of the Program, providers of public telephone networks and services, who will port numbers, will be responsible for the works planned for the second and third stages, whereas the entity/entities selected as a result of the tender will be responsible for the centralized data base.

Orange Moldova raises top broadband speed

Orange Moldova has increased the download broadband speeds offered under the Internet Acum brand from 21 to 42 Mbps.

The speed was improved in all areas covered by the 3G+ network of the company.

 

Opera Mini browser surpasses 107.1 mn users mark in April

Opera Mini browser had over 107.1 million users in April an increase of 4.6% from March. With this percentage Opera Mini browser has grabbed the top position as the world’s most popular mobile browser.

Indonesia and the Philippines are on top of user participation on social networks. More than 77% of mobile web users in these countries visit Facebook.

Opera Software itself has more than 400,000 users on Facebook alone. The top ten countries using the Opera Mini browser in the region are Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Moldova, Azerbaijan and Tajikistan.

From April 2010 to April this year, page views in the top ten countries of the CIS increased by 198 percent, unique users increased by 65 percent and data transferred increased by 176 percent.

 

Orange Moldova provides incoming foreign calls bonuses

Moldavian mobile operator, Orange has launched bonuses for incoming international calls.

The company will provide ten minutes of free on-net calls during weekends for every ten minutes of incoming international calls.

The offer is valid for postpaid as well as prepaid subscribers.
