T-Com to roll out IPTV service (Montenegro)

T-Com Montenegro (formerly known as Crnogorski Telekom) has announced that Scientific Atlanta has been selected to help it launch an internet protocol television (IPTV) service later this year. The new service is expected to deliver up to 60 channels of standard-definition digital programming.

Montenegro sees mobile user base rise to 881,500 (Montenegro)

The number of mobile telephone users in Montenegro has achieved a new record, surpassing 142 percent of the total population, according to the latest market figures. The previous record in the number of users was achieved last September, when a 127.6 percent penetration rate was registered. Out of the total 881,500 mobile telephony users in Montenegro at end-July, only 17.4 percent were post-paid. On an annual level, the number of subscribers in July grew by more than one quarter. ProMonte is still leader with a 54.7 percent market share, followed by T-Mobile with 40.14 percent and M:tel with 5.16 percent. In July, the users of all three networks sent around 73.4 million SMS messages or 18 percent more than in June. Outgoing traffic totaled 79.4 million minutes, 15 percent more vs the previous month.

TelCro, Zaba become first Croatian MVNOs

Croatia has its first mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) with the launch of services by TelCro and Zagrebacka Banka (Zaba), according to Croatia Today. Zaba’s service is being offered in partnership with network operator T-Mobile Croatia, whilst TelCro says it is considering extending services to neighbouring Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia, all of which currently lack MVNOs.

Telenor and LHS Expand Cooperation

Telenor Serbia has signed a licensing and maintenance agreement with LHS, a globally leading provider of telecom billing and customer care systems, enabling Telenor from now on to rate and bill wireline services in addition to its existing mobile services. This new agreement takes the cooperation between LHS and Telenor one step further, as Telenor already applies LHS’ billing and customer-care solutions in its operations in Bangladesh, Malaysia and Montenegro.

We expect a positive outcome from our business cooperation with LHS in the future. To optimize the workflow we always prefer to work very close with our technical providers, and in this case LHS is the owner of the billing system”, said Stein-Erik Vellan, CEO of Telenor. LHS is a highly professional company and its BSCS solution is a very flexible and reliable system that will allow us to continue offering our services in an efficient and customer-friendly way”, Vellan added.

Telenor Serbia is already in the planning phase for an upgrade to the latest version of the LHS billing software already in the planning phase.

We are happy to expand our excellent cooperation with Telenor, now also including Serbia”, said Wolfgang Kroh, CEO of LHS. The fact that our BCSC system will continue to be used once again proves that our solutions fully meet the requirements of our customers.”

MTEL signs EUR4.5m WiMAX contract

MTEL, Montenegro’s newest wireless licensee, has awarded Greek equipment vendor Intracom Telecom a EUR4.5 million contract for the deployment of WiMAX infrastructure. The deal includes the turnkey supply and installation of WiMAX base stations and user terminals and will be completed over a period of four months. The contract also includes managed services for a year, with an extension option for another three years.

MTEL is owned by Telekom Srbija (51%) and Ogalar (49%). The company won the country’s third wireless concession on 9 May 2007 and is planning to launch its GSM/W-CDMA network next month. By the end of 2007 the company expects to have coverage of 90% of the territory and have achieved a 15%-20% market-share.

Telekom Srpske customers gain free mobile roaming in Serbia and Montenegro

Predrag Culibrk, Telekom Srpske’s newly installed director general, has announced that his company’s mobile customers will enjoy free mobile roaming in Serbia and Montenegro from 1 July 2007. Telekom Srbije, the Serbian fixed line incumbent, acquired a 65% in Telekom Srpske earlier this year.

MT continues inquiry into subsidiary’s contracts, improves control procedures

Hungary’s dominant telecoms operator Magyar Telekom (MT) is continuing to probe several ‘suspect’ contracts worth an estimated HUF2 billion (USD10.5 million), signed by its 76.53%-owned fixed line unit in Montenegro, Telekom Montenegro (Telekom Crne Gore, TCG), and has put in place remedial measures to improve its control procedures. The investigation was launched in February this year after MT’s auditor indicated it had issues with some consultancy contracts signed by TCG.

Magyar Telekom’s Q3 profit down on weak fixed line revenues

Hungary’s dominant telecoms company says its net profit in the three months to 30 September 2006 dipped as a result of a weak performance from its fixed line unit. The incumbent said net income was HUF23.4 billion (USD113.9 million), down marginally from HUF23.6 billion in the corresponding period of 2005, but beat the median forecast estimate of HUF21.5 billion in a Bloomberg survey of analysts. The former monopoly faces increased competition in both the fixed and mobile market and revenues from new services such as its internet operations and foreign ventures have thus far failed to offset the decline. Fixed line sales in the first nine months of 2006 climbed by 3.5% to HUF253.4 billion, mobile phone revenue rose 12.3% to HUF241.5 billion, and sales from its internet business were up 23.9% to HUF36.3 billion.

Last year Magyar Telekom started the process of merging its mobile unit T-Mobile Hungary into the group in a move it says could save it HUF20 billion over four years. The former monopoly has yet to produce audited results for its fiscal year 2005, a fact which has led to the postponement of its AGM, which was scheduled for April. Magyar Telekom’s operational difficulties have been mirrored by a series of legal problems, many relating to four disputed contracts at its Montenegro unit. Some reports suggest that legal fees relating to these cases have reached HUF3.1 billion, surpassing the original value of the agreements. Meanwhile, the uncertainty over the pending law suits has had a negative impact on the company’s share price, leaving it trailing in Hungary’s benchmark BUX Index, writes Bloomberg.
