Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Chairman, Dr Mohammed Yaseen, announces the blocking of nearly 10.5 million unverified SIMs. According to the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), more than 7.3 million connections were blocked by 30 April 2008. In the second phase, the SIMs sold between 1 May 2008 and 30 May 2008 will be targeted.
Following the the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) which states that no more than ten connections are allowed per computerised national identity card (CNIC), and a further 2.6 million connections have been stopped for violating this regulation.
PTA has been restating to stop the sale of pre-activated SIMs, in order to have full implementation of SOP. The regulator is also lookin for a solution to deal with mobile operators and ask NADRA to create a framework for the sale and activation of SIM cards.
