Tax gain boosts Nokia Q4 profits

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: With a one-time tax gain of EUR 213 million, the fourth-quarter EPS of Nokia increased from EUR 0.15 to EUR 0.26. However, Nokia also suffered 1% fall in EPS to EUR 0.25 excluding the tax effect and a number of restructuring charges.

However, overall operating profit of the group increased due to the profit at NSN and better margins from handsets.

O2 apologize for snag in London network

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: The head of O2 has apologized for the problems the customers faced due to mobile operator’s London network being overwhelmed with bandwidth-hungry smartphones. The customers were disappointed with O2′s network performance in London since summer. However the company started experiencing major network difficulties during the second half of 2009 when

customers with Apple’s iPhone ramped up their use of applications that repeatedly pull data off the internet at short intervals.Without missing the opportunity Vodafone, the second largest operator is claiming that its network will cope far better with the growing number of smartphones.

According to the company the rising demand of data services on smartphones have caused difficulties in the O2 network. Many O2 customers could not make or receive calls and download material to their handsets because of the clogged network by smartphones

However the head of the company has assured that any short term blip in O2′s network Reputation will be addressed by three solutions. Firstly O2 has been working with Nokia Siemens Networks, its infrastructure supplier, on software modifications that will ensure it can better manage the combination of voice and data traffic on its network.

Secondly, the installation of 200 additional mobile base stations in London will increase the traffic load the network can bear. And thirdly O2 is liaising with handset manufacturers, including Apple and Research in Motion, maker of the BlackBerry, to learn about applications which might result into heavy demand on the network.

Telecom Industry Layoffs

A couple of disturbing articles on layoffs in the mobile industry today. The first, are gloomy predictions published on Om Malik’s blog :

100,000 will soon be fired in our industry, including well over 30,000 at Deutsche Telecom and tens of thousands more at Alcatel Lucent, Nokia Siemens, and AT&T BellSouth.

Many of those fired, especially older folk, will never find a decent job again. Klaus Kleinfeld and other Siemens executives are giving up 5 million euros in pay increases to enhance the fund for fired ex-Siemens workers at BenQ, after a massive public outcry led by German clergy. Few other CEOs are likely to follow that example.

And The Guardian, reports on a mammoth restructuring of Vodafone’s UK-based global marketing division. Under a cost-cutting plan announced earlier in the year, roughly 200 of the company’s 500 marketing people were to leave.

Though it’s unclear whether Graeme Ferguson, Vodafone’s global head of content development’s departure is a direct result of the cull, The Guardian reports Mr Ferguson last year urged an audience of game developers to stop making “crap” film tie-in games because “consumers aren’t mugs” and such games do not sell.”
