Vodafone, Verizon join hands to boost M2M services

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: With an aim to simplify the remote management and monitoring of devices spread across European and US networks, Vodafone, Verizon Wireless and nPhase, a Verizon Wireless and Qualcomm joint venture, have announced to form an alliance.

Increased demand for M2M services on mobile networks across Europe and North America over the coming years is expected by the members of this alliance. It will become easy for the customers of Verizon Wireless and Vodafone to activate, monitor and pay for devices that are deployed across both European (GSM) and USA (CDMA) networks.

Besides, the move will enable firms to centrally manage and control the process of rolling out M2M devices across many countries. According to Steve Pazol, president of nPhase, business alliance removes many of the complexities by building on the tremendous capabilities and reach of Vodafone and Verizon Wireless to offer a single standard interface, and provide pre-certified global devices that can support both CDMA and GSM networks.

Qualcomm Signs up New Licensee

Qualcomm has granted Tecore Wireless Systems a patent license  to develop, manufacture and sell certain infrastructure products using CDMA2000 vocoder technology.

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but Tecore asserts that the license will enable the company to deliver mobile switching solutions, such as wireless local loop networks and rapid response communications, to wireless operators and integrators worldwide.

The Tecore deal marks Qualcomm’s third 3G licensing deal since September. The company also signed up Himachal Futuristic Communications Limited as a CDMA2000 licensee. Continental signed up for a CDMA2000 telematics module license.

Qualcomm recently reported fiscal fourth-quarter net income of $614 million, or 36 cents a share, up from $538 million, or 32 cents a share, a year ago. Revenue came in at $2 billion, a 28-percent jump from the $1.6 billion reported in the same period a year ago. Last week, Qualcomm announced its plans to purchase nPhase to advance its position in the machine-to-machine (M2M) communications market. Qualcomm has participated in the M2M market for more than 15 years.
