Head of O2 Ireland to resign next month

Danuta Gray, the head of O2 Ireland is to resign next month, after nine years in charge of the company. She will be replaced by O2 UK’s consumer sales director, Stephen Shurrock with effect from December 1st. In the past nine years, O2 Ireland has significantly increased its customer base and become the second largest network in the country.

Ms Gray will also be leaving the Telef³nica Europe board at the end of November. However, she will remain as part-time non-executive chairman of Telef³nica O2 Ireland, and take on an advisory role within Telef³nica Europe.

According to Chief executive of Telef³nica Europe, Matthew Key, the outgoing chief executive had successfully led the Irish business from the outset, and praised her leadership skills. This is a great opportunity for Stephen Shurrock and he is delighted that the company has been able to promote from within the group. Stephen’s appointment underlines the commitment to Ireland and the ongoing success of our business.

Mr Shurrock joined O2 in 2000 and has held a number of senior sales and finance roles, including head of commercial finance for Telef³nica O2 UK. As head of the consumer sales division, he managed a team of 4,000, and has presided over a significant improvement in the performance of Telef³nica O2 UK’s direct business and the online channel.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Activities in the Republic’s fixed line segment has been planned to be increased O2 Ireland, backed by Spanish telecoms giant Telefonica through the launch of a range of products targeting the SME and large businesses markets.

The aim of the firm is to deliver a so-called ‘one stop shop’ for a firm’s fixed and mobile communications requirements and for this O2 is introducing a bundled fixed line and broadband tariff plan. These plans include free calls to O2 mobiles and free local, national and UK landline calls for EUR49.99 (USD68.07) per month.

According to O2 Ireland business sales director Alan Brown, research shows that customers want the ‘one stop shop’ bundled solution that will meet all of their communications requirements, mobile and fixed, with one monthly bill and to that end, O2 has invested significantly in a new systems infrastructure to deliver this seamless service to its customer.

O2 to launch Irish mobile TV trials

O2 Ireland has teamed up with communications technology company Arqiva to launch consumer trials of broadcast mobile television. The trial will begin in the Republic in December 2006 and aims to include the live broadcast of all main Irish TV channels as well as Sky and other stations. O2 claims it is the first mobile operator in Ireland to test such services and says that from January 2007 the trial will be expanded to include 400 O2 Ireland customers in the Greater Dublin area. The pilot project will last eight months and will be conducted using Nokia N92 mobile TV handsets.
