Motorola Q1 profit rises, handset sale falls

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: The U.S. handset maker, Motorola has announced a profit of $69 million in the first quarter of 2010 as compared to a loss of $231 million in the first quarter of 2009. Even the operating loss of the company narrowed from $545 million on March 31, 2009 to $192 million during March 31, 2010.
The first-quarter operating profit at Moto’s networks division rose to $112 million from $62 million while earnings at its enterprise mobility arm surged to $141 million from $66 million
9% Decline in the revenue of the company has been reported from $1.80 billion in Q1 2009 to $1.64 billion. Even the overall device shipments sank 42% to 8.5 million from 14.7 million a year earlier.
The company’s average selling price (ASP) rose from $169 to $194 owing to continued focus on smartphones. The handset vendor also introduced six new devices and according to co-CEO and head of mobile devices Sanjay Jh, Moto plans to launch 20 Android-powered smartphones in total during 2010.

Ukraine’s Ukrtelecom revenues recover

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Total consolidated revenues of UAH8.138 billion (USD1.035 billion) for full-year 2009 has been posted by Ukrtelecom, Ukraine’s national PTO and 3G mobile operator. The revenue is up from a reported UAH7.890 billion in 2008, and reversing the previous 2% year-on-year fall.
The net loss of the company narrowed from a whopping UAH1.528 billion in 2008 to UAH456 million last year.
The operating loss narrowed to UAH36 million in 2009, compared to UAH128 million the year before for the fixed line, broadband and cellular provider.

Irish telco Imagine reports a net loss of EUR9.2 million

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: A net loss of EUR9.2 million (USD12.8 million) has been reported by Imagine Communications, the Irish telecoms venture founded by Sean Bolger in 2008. In the year 2008 also, the company suffered a loss of EUR8.8 million. The accumulated loss of the firm stood at EUR30.8 million at the same date.
The operating loss of the telco is almost EUR8 million, turnover from acquisitions has dipped to EUR11.4 million from EUR18.8 million and net debt has climbed from EUR5.2 million to EUR6.1 million.
Imagine’s revenue increased 66% year-on-year to EUR82.5 million and turnover climbed to EUR94 million in 2008, up from EUR68.7 million the previous year.

Sony widens FY loss but gains in Q4

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: The mobile companies are feeling the bite of the tough competition in the telecom market and slow economic growth all over the world. With a full year loss of €836 million ($236m), handset firm Sony Ericsson feels that 2010 will be more challenging as the full benefit of cost improvements will not impact results until the second half of the year.
Just 57.1 million phones were shipped by the company in 2009 as compared to 96.6 million in 2008. Revenue too slumped 39.6% for the year to €6.8 billion. Handset shipments were also down 39.6% from a year earlier. Excluding restructuring charges, the operating loss of €854 million was recorded as compared with €61 million in 2008.
With operating margin lifting from 5% to 2%, the quarterly loss improved to €167 million, up from €187 million a year earlier. According to President Bert Nordberg, the company will focus to return to profitability by establishing Sony Ericsson as the communication entertainment brand based on an exciting portfolio of mid- and high-end products.

Sony Ericsson predicts ‘challenging’ 2010

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: With a net loss of EUR 167 million in the fourth quarter as compared to the loss of EUR 187 million in the year-earlier period, a challenging 2010 is expected by Sony Ericsson. However, the operating loss was reduced to EUR 32 million from EUR 133 million a year ago and EUR 191 million in Q3.
Achievement of the full benefit of the targeted EUR 880 million in annual cost savings by the second half of this year has been expected by Sony Ericsson. Restructuring cost that should have stayed within the targeted EUR 500 million has already reached.
14.6 million phones were shipped by Sony in Q4, up slightly from 14.1 million in Q3 2009 but down from 24.2 million in the last quarter of 2008. Similar patterns were seen in the average selling price which is EUR 120 per phone as compared to EUR 114 in Q3 and EUR 121 a year earlier.

Sagem H1 operating loss widens to EUR 67 million

French defence and communications equipment group Safran’s communications division, which includes Sagem mobile phones, made a EUR 67 million operating loss on a revenue down 3 percent to EUR 1.08 billion in the first half of 2006, compared to an EUR 11 million operating loss on EUR 1.11 billion in sales in the year-earlier period. The mobile phone unit widened its operating loss to EUR 52 million from EUR 24 million, on sales down 2 percent to EUR 477 million from EUR 485 million. Safran cited as first-half achievements the shipment of 8.5 million mobile phones, including more than 100,000 my700x EDGE handsets. The communication division’s shipments of home gateways rose by 26 percent to 2.8 million units, and it also shipped 450,000 MPEG4 set-top boxes. The company has not commented on rumours that it was considering the sale of its mobile phone division to Motorola.
