Verizon deploys IP optical transport network in Europe (USA)
Verizon Business will begin a roll-out of its IP-based optical transport network in Europe in December. The first phase will include ultra long-haul equipment deployed on the core backbone network routes between Verizon Business’ main European network hubs in London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris and Brussels, providing the first 3,230 km of ULH transport on the Verizon Business European network. The network supports integrated optical transport and enables photonic switching of wavelengths for network restoration and shorter customer provisioning intervals. This technology will support speeds up to 40 Gbps and will give Verizon Business customers in Europe access to use high-bandwidth intensive services. The first phase of ULH deployment is scheduled to be completed during the first quarter of 2008. Nortel is a supplier on the project, providing its Optical Multiservice Edge 6500 platform, ROADM technology, Optical Network Manager and Common Photonic Layer for network migration. Nortel Global Services is assisting with the deployment, providing turn-key installation services for Verizon Business and will include support for integration into existing management systems and Network Operation Center facilities.
