Congestion between mobile operators alarming: TRAI
New Delhi, Oct 14: Telecom regulator TRAI today warned that the degree of congestion between telecom operators had reached alarming levels leading to poor service quality.
The results of data monitoring for June and July reveal that “in a number of areas, the degree of congestion between the operators is alarming. In a number of cities, the level of congestion between the networks of different operators is far more than the notified benchmark,” TRAI said in a statement.
This kind of clogging was leading to severe drop in service quality, including a high rate of call dropping.
According to data released by TRAI, private telecom players like Reliance Communication (including Reliance Telecom operating GSM services) are having congestion at maximum number of PoIs at 204 followed by Bharti Airtel at 158 and Tata at 81 during the month of July.
The benchmark notified by TRAI is less than 0.5 per cent. This means out of 200 calls between two operators only one call should face congestion problem.
The Point of Interconnection (PoI) congestion report analysis for the month of May to July shows that number of PoIs having congestion has reduced from 616 in May to 537 in July.
Hutch-Essar is having congestions at 24 PoIs, while Idea cellular at 39.
State owned MTNL, operating only in Delhi and Mumbai, emerges the most efficient operators having no congestion at any of its PoIs, TRAI said.
The regulator feels that congestions among private operators has increased during the period under consideration as compared to congestions between private operators and BSNL.
