Polish regulator plans to zero the MTR by 2010 (Poland)
UKE, the Polish regulator is planning to zero the mobile termination rates in 2010, in order to seek lower phone bills. MTRs are the rates an operator charges it’s competitors for allowing calls into it’s network.
“Maybe we will impose a zero-rate duty between all mobile operators and between mobile and fixed-line operators,” Anna Strezynska said.
“Experiences from outside Europe show that telecom traffic rises then and after initial protests operators achieve satisfactory results. If we were to implement this, it would be January 1, 2010.”
Poland’s largest telecom operator TPSA, a unit of France Telecom, revealed that this year’s MTR cut would trim 200 million zlotys ($81.3 million) from 2008 sales of its mobile unit, Centertel.
