Huawei signs contract with Saudi Arabia’s Mobily
Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. (Huawei), a leader in providing next generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, has signed a contract with Saudi Arabia’s Mobily for the construction of an UMTS network.
A statement issued by Huawei, and made available to Khaleej Times here, explained that according to the contract, Huawei will supply its New Generation Node B solution as part of Mobily’s (Etihad Etisalat, the second mobile operator in Saudi Arabia) plans to deploy a UMTS terrestrial radio access network (Utran) based on High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA).
The statement added that Huawei strategically collaborates with Mobily, owned by UAE’s Etisalat, not only in the field of 3-G but also in deploying GSM networks.
“Huawei is pleased to be the major supplier for Mobily’s 3-G Network and deploy a high quality network with strong performance,” said Wang Jiading, vice-president, Huawei Technologies, Middle East and North Africa Operations. “We are confident in our ability to continuously add value to our customers with innovative 3-G solutions,” he added.
He said that Huawei’s UMTS New Generation Node B incorporates new and innovative features, such as an efficient digital power amplifier to support the multi-carrier technology and support for full performance HSDPA. The new generation UMTS Node B effectively improves network performance for operators.
“Huawei’s UMTS New Generation Node B has been widely deployed in many countries including Spain, Portugal, Poland, Malaysia, and Hong Kong,” he said, and added, “As a leading New Generation Node B supplier, Huawei will consistently focus on customers’ needs, and enrich lives through communication by providing innovative products, excellent services and network solutions.”
Meanwhile, Siemens recently upgraded the mobile network of Saudi Telecom with W-CDMA technology in the northern part of Saudi Arabia. In the near future, other parts of the country will also be given W-CDMA coverage. Saudi Telecom was the first commercial GSM mobile operator in the Kingdom. Following successful W-CDMA tests with Siemens technology, the company commissioned the Siemens Communications Group with the nationwide installation of 3-G technology.

Namibia’s MTC mobile firm to build 3G network
JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) – Namibia’s main mobile phone operator, Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC), 34-percent owned by Portugal Telecom, plans to launch third generation services and Siemens will build the network.
Siemens said in a statement late on Monday it had agreed to supply and install a new 3G HSDPA network, which connects customers to high-speed broadband services via their mobile phones.
The statement said the new technology — one of the first 3G networks in sub-Saharan Africa — would give MTC an edge as it girds for the launch of a second mobile operator, Powercom, planned for later this year.
“The installation of a 3G HSDPA network will give MTC a significant technology advantage over its new competitor,” said Siemens, adding it expected the network to be up and running by the end of the year.
MTC’s new rival Powercom is owned by Norway’s Telecom Management Partners, the Namibian energy utility NamPower and several others. It has said it plans to build 3G technology but has yet to announce concrete plans.
Industry analysts and companies are divided over whether 3G technology — which have had mixed success in the West — makes good business sense for the world’s poorest continent, where only a tiny proportion of users will be able to afford the services.
However proponents point out that on a continent with patchy fixed-line services, mobile technology could boost access to broadband Internet access.
South Africa’s Vodacom, owned by Vodafone and Telkom, and MTN have already launched 3G services. Mauritius already has 3G services and networks are being built in Zimbabwe and Tanzania.

Regional telecom operators need to become integrated service providers, says Huawei Technologies
‘Telecom services and networks will undergo structural changes in the next five years and the goal of many operators is to have all operations on internet based architecture by 2010. Operators need to avoid churn and safeguard revenue by providing the high speed and quality services that users demand at low costs,’ said Wang Jiading, vice president, Huawei Technologies, Middle East and North Africa Operations.
’3G/WCDMA/HSPA is clearly the preferred mass market technology as it scores highly on revenue generation capability, cost efficiency and technical performance and represents the clearest evolutionary path forward for mobile operators. Currently, the service layer is mainly built around voice services but with the increase in data services, this focus will shift towards integrated services and customer experience,’ Jiading added.
Huawei, with its large mobile customer base worldwide, and vision of the market from the transmission (wireless and optical) and infrastructure (GSM/UMTS/WiFi) points of view, offers products and solutions that can respond to these market changes. Its aim is to enable mobile operators to successfully deploy UMTS in an optimised and cost-effective way by offering a product portfolio that offers the best-fit solution at the right time.
The company’s UMTS Distributed NodeB Solution was developed to address customers’ demands to build a quality 3G network quickly and economically. According to Huawei’ s internal research and analysis, this solution can effectively reduce total cost of ownership for operators by more than 30 per cent as well as speed up the completion of a 3G network construction.
As one of the world’s mainstream UMTS suppliers, Huawei has won 31 commercial UMTS contracts to date. Huawei’s innovative mobile Softswitch and new generation NodeBs serve many operators around the world including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Portugal and Hong Kong, among others.

Regional telecom operators need to become integrated service providers
The launch of High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) in the region is currently boosting the deployment of a new generation of broadband multi-media mobile telecommunications technology or third generation (3G) telecom technology.
To ensure these services are provided at competitive rates, mobile network operators have to increasingly choose wireless broadband technology that is most appropriate for their strategic business objectives and their network evolutionary paths. Carriers need to focus on new services – while internet protocol based TV (IPTV) is currently the most promising technology in the consumer market, the ability to provide integrated solutions which include solution design, service hosting and business process outsourcing is a key area of concern for business users.
“Telecom services and networks will undergo structural changes in the next five years and the goal of many operators is to have all operations on internet based architecture by 2010. Operators need to avoid churn and safeguard revenue by providing the high speed and quality services that users demand at low costs,” said Wang Jiading, vice president, Huawei Technologies, Middle East and North Africa Operations.

Vodafone Portugal calls on regulator to block PT takeover
Vodafone Portugal has issued a statement outlining its arguments against regulatory approval for a takeover of Portugal Telecom (PT) by Sonaecom. The company feels that measures presented by the competition authority (AdC) are unlikely to minimise the risk of distortion to competition. Notwithstanding the possible application of “remedies” by the AdC, the bid as it stands would reinforce dominance in several markets, giving the combined entity an over 60 percent market share. A move from three mobile operators to one large one and (possibly) two smaller ones would prejudice the smaller ones in a market where there a few new customers. Portugal’s present levels of accessibility, diversity, price and quality of services are at risk, Vodafone says, as the mobile operator resulting from the bid, part of a powerful commercial group, would hold a “hegemonic” position “unique in European markets”.
