T-Mobile USA Working to Offer 3G Service
Although T-Mobile USA is well behind its competitors in offering third-generation wireless services to its customers, this isn’t because this carrier doesn’t want provide these premium services. It instead, it’s because T-Mobile doesn’t have the rights to enough of the wireless spectrum. Adding additional services would require the rights to use additional parts of the spectrum.
Fortunately for this company, the Federal Communications Commission is currently holding an auction for exactly what this carrier needs, and T-Mobile is bidding heavily.
It put in bids for spectrum in six different regions, plus it is bidding on additional spectrum in some of the nation’s largest cities.
And these bids have been quite aggressive. The auction has just started and will go on for several months, but T-Mobile USA put in more than half of the 40 highest bids made on the first day.
Licenses for wireless spectrum don’t come cheap. So far, T-Mobile alone has bid $437 million and that figure will certainly go up before the auction is over.
What Are T-Mobile’s Plans?
Assuming it gets the spectrum it needs, exactly what T-Mobile is going to do with it is not yet known. Still, some educated guesses can be made.
All the other carriers in the U.S. are deploying 3G wireless services, like EV-DO, UMTS, and HSDPA. Compared to the data transfer speeds provided by these, the fastest service service currently offered by T-Mobile moves at a snail’s pace.
If it wants to stay competitive, this carrier needs to offer 3G services of its own. And to do that, it needs to be successful in the FCC’s spectrum auction.
Coming Soon
T-Mobile hasn’t been waiting around for the spectrum it needs to become available. Instead, it has been testing 3G services, and believes it will be ready to deploy them as soon as it gets the spectrum.
That’s why the carrier hopes to begin offering high-speed cellular-wireless services before the of this year.
