QtelTelecommunications service provider Qtel Group has announced a new strategic plan in an attempt to keep up with the changing needs of the telecom industry. According to reports, Dr Nasser Marafih, CEO, Qtel Group said that they have had significant success to date and their aspiration to join the top twenty global operators by the end of the decade remains important for them. However, they recognize that the market is changing quickly and that they need to change with it.

He added that their new vision and Group strategy builds on their previous strategy and refines it by increasing their focus on differentiated customer experience, on transforming the way they manage their operations and embracing emerging and parallel business opportunities. At the same time, they will continue to set themselves challenging financial targets.

Vodafone Qatar has launched a new prepaid Blackberry on Red for just US$ 13.5 per month.  Further, the company has said that everyone who signs up before 31 October 2011 will get this rate guaranteed for the next 10 years. This offer is available to all Vodafone Red and Freedom customers.

According to reports, John Saad, Chief Marketing Officer, Vodafone Qatar, has said that Vodafone understands how passionate people in Qatar are about their BlackBerry. Vodafone has had BlackBerry for Account customers for more than a year and they are now delighted to offer this service on prepay with such mega value and at one of the lowest rates in the region.

Apart from the great low rate for BlackBerry, Vodafone is giving customers as much as 300MB of free data each month for local BlackBerry traffic. This can be used for BBM, surfing the net, emails or social networking.

Further, in continuing with its innovative ideas, Vodafone Qatar in partnership with Mobiroo Inc. launched its prepaid BlackBerry App card enabling users to purchase and download BlackBerry Apps without needing to use a credit card. As per reports, Praveen Senadheera, Product Manager for BlackBerry, Vodafone Qatar said that mobile games and entertainment applications are becoming one of the most used features in smartphones today for which most App Stores customers need a credit card to purchase paid applications.

Vodafone BlackBerry customers can purchase the App Card for USD 13.6 from all Vodafone Retail outlets.  The card provides customers with instructions on how to access the Vodafone App Store where they can browse and download applications of their choice up to the value of the card.

The Kuwaiti telco witnesses a robust growth in revenue on the back of strong domestic and Algeria operations.

Wataniya Telecom also, known as National Mobile Telecommunications Co. based in Kuwait stated that its net profit for the second quarter rose by 18.7% to $85.4 million from $71.9 million the preceding year for the same period; Tunisian operations have been significantly attributed by the jump in revenue.

Earlier, analysts had predicted a figure in the tune of $83.68 million while one other source forecast $74.87 million; the telecom’s results have exceeded them all.

There was an increase of 35.2% in revenue for the quarter to $669.11 million as compared to $494.76 million in the same quarter the preceding year.

The telco also witnessed a rise in its customer base by 6.8% to hit 16.9 million by the end of the second quarter, as compared to 15.8 million for the same period the preceding year.

According to Sheikh Abdullah Bin Saud Al Thani, Chairman of Wataniya Telecom, Year on Year revenue increase of 15.4% in Kuwait and 30.6% in Algeria shows that investments of previous periods are starting to pay off and that they are capable of driving progress in competitive markets. On the other hand, Tunisiana’s robust performance demonstrates the ability to overcome challenges and produce solid results.

Qatar Telecom or Qtel which is the Gulf Arab state’s largest telecom operator, in partnership with Tunisian investment firm Princesse Holding asserted on November 22 that they would pay Orascom Telecom $1.2 billion for its 50% stake in its Tunisian unit, Tunisiana. Eventually, Qtel completed the acquisition through Wataniya Telecom whose majority stakes it owns. In addition, Qtel had raised its stake in Tunisiana to 75% earlier this year.

­Vodafone Qatar happens to be a joint venture between Vodafone and the Qatar Foundation. The operator has seen a 65% rise in its quarterly revenue that stands at $79.7 million. In addition, the quarterly profit posted before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) is $8.5 million.

Concerning the average revenue per user (ARPU), the operator has seen a rise of 11% year-on-year. Currently, stands at $31.85. In addition, the number of mobile customers as on 30 June stands at 761,000, representing a 43% rise.

According to what is outlined in Vodafone Qatar’s IPO prospectus, there is no change at the moment as far as dividend guidance is concerned. The Company is looking to pay dividends based on performance in the financial year ending 31 March 2013.

Vodafone owns 23% in Vodafone Qatar, the Qatar Foundation 22% while 40% is floated on the stock exchange, in addition to 15% that the government investors own.

Indosat, the Indonesian mobile network looks to sell its tower assets in a bid to rake in upwards of $500 million.

According to sources who are in privy with the plan, revealed that the company is not willing to sell the assets in question to its primary rival networks, namely Telekomunikasi Indonesia and  XL Axiata.

Profesional Telekomunikasi Indonesia, Tower Bersama Infrastructure and Solusi Tunas Pratama are touted to be frontrunners, bidding for the base station towers; apparently been holding talks with banks to acquire loans as part of funding the acquisition.

Reportedly, 4,000 out of the 17,000 towers owned by the company comprise the sale offer. Late in the previous year, the company had hinted at selling up to 14,000 of its towers in 2011.

Qatar Telecom controls 65% of Indosat.

The Supreme Council of Information and Communications Technology (ictQatar) and the Qatar National Broadband Network (Q.NBN) announced that the Q.NBN Board of Directors has appointed Mohammed Al Mannai as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company tasked with building a nationwide fiber broadband network. Al Mannai’s appointment was effective June 1, 2011.

“The Qatar National Broadband Network represents Qatar’s digital highway to the future and is an essential service for our citizens as we move our country forward. I am confident that Mohammed Al Mannai will provide the leadership and vision necessary to make the Qatar National Broadband Network a reality, to the benefit of everyone in Qatar,” said Dr. Hessa Al-Jaber, ictQATAR’s Secretary General.

Al Mannai has more than 13 years of experience in network planning, deployment and optimization with Qatar Telecom (Qtel), where he most recently served as Senior Director for Network Design and Rollout, where he was responsible for the design and implementation of both fixed and wireless networks for Qtel. In addition to his work at Qtel, Al Mannai was part of the team involved in network planning, building and operations for the 2006 Asian Games in Doha. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Electronics from the American University in Cairo, and has numerous professional management and leadership certifications from institutions including IMD, Insead and the Carnegie Bosch Institute.

“The Qatar National Broadband Network will be a vital part of developing Qatar’s telecommunications market and advancing our economy. I look forward to working with all the involved stakeholders to build a world-class high-speed fiber network in Qatar. It is an honor to be entrusted with leading this important national initiative,” said Al Mannai.

Q.NBN is a fully independent company with the government mandate to accelerate the rollout of a nationwide, open, and accessible high-speed broadband Fiber to the Home (FTTH) network. Q.NBN will provide fiber access to citizens and businesses across Qatar, achieving coverage targets in excess of 95% by 2015.

The resulting high-speed broadband connectivity will enable the effective use of multimedia and communications applications that are central to developing Qatar’s knowledge economy.

Q.NBN will focus solely on the deployment of a passive network infrastructure, efficiently leveraging existing and new infrastructure in Qatar. Q.NBN operates within the existing laws and under license conditions issued by ictQatar.

Vodafone Qatar has begun pre-registration for the BlackBerry PlayBook. The company will be officially launching PlayBook this month.

The prospective customers who registe­r now will be the first to own an official PlayBook from Research In Motion (RIM). Rival Qtel earlier announced it will also carry the Wi-Fi version of the PlayBook.
