www.WirelessFederation.com/news: The political leaders of China and Japan are likely to hold talks on developing 3G mobile telephone network jointly for the Chinese mobile market. Japan already uses 3G mobile standards, which allows smooth transmission of images and music files, while 2G technology still remains predominant in China.
Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso is likely to meet Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Wednesday and President Hu Jintao on Thursday in Beijing.
According to Japanese industry ministry official a mobile phone system upgrade “is one of the subjects that they may discuss during the summit” but he added that no agreement was expected yet.
A local Japanese media report also said that Aso and Wen are expected to agree on jointly developing 3G and the more advanced 3.9G services, enabling quick transmission of video files, for the Chinese market.
The Japanese mobile phone manufacturers in China have been left behind in the race by rivals such as Finnish Nokia Corp. and South Korea’s Samsung Electronics Co., driven by incompatible of standards.
If the two countries join hands, according to a media report, will develop applications and content for the 3.9G services which Japan also plans to introduce next year.
With foreign firms dominating 70% of the Chinese mobile handset market, Beijing aims to encourage the technical prowess of home-grown companies through the alliance.
Whereas Japan hopes that the technological alliance will help Japanese firms make inroads into China’s heavily regulated telecoms sector.

dotMobi today announced its collaboration with the GSM Association (GSMA: 66.05, 0, 0%) to make the award-winning DeviceAtlas(TM: 15.1299, 0, 0%) database available with an option for Type Allocation Codes (TAC: undefined, undefined, undefined%). This will allow network operators to offer a host of new, innovative content and services tailored to users’ handsets. For instance, operators could send a welcome MMS to roaming customers with media-rich weather reports and links to local mobile Web sites rather than a static SMS network welcome message.

“The technology is simple but powerful,” said Paul Nerger, dotMobi’s VP of Advanced Services and Applications. “Every mobile phone has a unique International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI: 15.1299, 0, 0%) number. And the IMEI numbers contain a Type Allocation Code (TAC: 2.88, 0, 0%), which the GSMA allocates to each make and model of mobile phone. When users turn on their handsets, the IMEI number is instantly recognized by the network operator. That means operators can identify the make and model of a user’s handset and — when combined with DeviceAtlas — the phone’s exact capabilities. This allows custom content and messages tailored for the phones capabilities to be pushed to the subscriber.”

DeviceAtlas is a superset of existing mobile device databases and contains attribute information for more than 5,500 devices around the world, including leading-edge mobile devices like the Apple iPhone, RIM Blackberry, Nintendo DS Lite and Amazon Kindle.

Trey Harvin, CEO of dotMobi, said, “This is an exciting step forward in the development of advanced ‘value-added’ services. It represents the missing puzzle piece that allows media-rich content to be pushed to all phones, tailored to match a phone’s capabilities. Combining our award-wining DeviceAtlas product with the GSMA’s TAC database offers great opportunities for operators, advertisers and subscribers to provide sophisticated mobile content across the widest possible range of handsets.”

More information on DeviceAtlas — including a free Web-based version and free, fully licensed version for developers — is available at http://deviceatlas.com. Additionally, dotMobi offers other popular content creation tools on the free http://mobiForge.com developer forum to help businesses and brands more easily create device-aware mobile content.

The economic recession in the global market as a whole has affected people on a macro level as companies are cutting down on costs which have in turn led to job cuts or salary and pension cut. This credit crunch has affected the lives of people on a micro level also, as they are cutting down their expenditure on luxury as well as commodity goods. Mobile phones, which have now become a necessity for people, according to a recent study will see sale shrinkage in 2009. The operators already fear the piling up of unsold handsets in stores.
A recent survey unveils that the global mobile phone market will see a fall of 6.6% in 2009 and 5.7% in Q4′08, wherein the sales reach a peak with the festivity around.
The world’s largest handset makers, Nokia, have already trimmed its 2009 forecasts, warning a negative growth in the mobile phone market. It has also being seen that Sony and Samsung Electronics have axed jobs and given out profit warnings respectively.  The study further reveals that due to a slowered recovery from the fiscal lean period, has called for contraction in the market, ranging from 5-10%. The European market wherein the margins are greater the high end mobile phones sales are huge, which is now likely to fall steeply in 2009. The sale of mobile phones in emerging markets comprises of two-thirds of the total sales globally in 2008. Mobile Phone makers were ready for the recession but their question of concern was the possible build-up of large inventories, as in 2001. Contrarily, the vendors are looking forward to reach their targets in 2009, which could call for an oversupply of handsets in Q1′09.
LG anticipates a slowered sale of mobile phones in 2009 and still obtain Sony’s no.3 position. Whereas, Nokia and Samsung Electronics are set to end 2009 with stronger market share, anticipated at 39.6% and 17.3% respectively.
Oddly, Motorola would lose the most market share, with the wide range of estimates, from 55 million to 100.7 million phones, reflecting the uncertainties over the company’s future.
