Telecom Italia, sector regulator to examine change to fixed line regulations

MILAN (AFX) – Italy’s communications authority said it and Telecom Italia SpA are ready to work on a change to fixed line regulations, while at the same time safeguarding a competitive market.

Earlier, the authority’s top officials met a Telecom Italia delegation led by chairman Guido Rossi to discuss the firm’s planned separation of fixed local loop and mobile networks into two separate units.

‘As far as the improved transparency in conditions of access to the fixed network, the authority and the heads of Telecom Italia have agreed to look at a change in the commitments and regulatory conditions, while safeguarding the competitive situation,’ it said.

‘It is a question of a complex process that will require time,’ it said.

Telecom Italia has said that the network separation is aimed at speeding up regulatory approval for the launch of its latest services, which recently have been delayed by regulatory queries.

Analysts have said that rival telecom operators will in due course get easier access to Telecom Italia’s local loop network, while at the same time facing tougher competition in services.
