A report has been released by independent app store GetJar predicting that the worth of the global mobile applications market will become as high as $17.5 billion (£11.5 billion) by 2012. The current value is a fourfold increase from its value of $4.1 billion in 2009. It has also been predicted that an increase from 7 billion in 2009 to almost 50 billion in 2012 will be noticed in the total number of mobile app downloads as well.

Off-deck paid-for apps will become the biggest revenue generator by 2012. In 2009, on-deck apps accounted for over 60% of all apps revenue but the percentage is expected to fall under 23% by 2012. Apart from apps, opportunities for both high end smartphones and feature phones have also been reflected in the report.

According to the report, revenue opportunities in Europe are set to soar from $1.5 billion in 2009 to $8.5 billion in 2012, while in North America, the figure will rise from around $2.1 billion to around $6.7 billion in 2012. Currently, Asia is the most popular country with applications having 37% of global downloads in 2009. However, North America accounts for the spending of maximum money for downloading these applications.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Apple’s iPhone is preferred by 40% of Blackberry users as their next smartphone purchase. However, a third of them would also switch to the Android operating system. The users of the two rival handsets are also very loyal as 90% plan to stick with their current brand when buying their next phone.

According to a latest research carried out by a research agency, the debut of Nexus One on January 5 has affected the research as awareness of the Android operating system jumped six points to 66% from 60%.

The results also show that the restlessness of Blackberry users with their current brand hasn’t just been driven by the allure of iPhone and rather, Blackberry as a brand just isn’t garnering the loyalty seen with other mobile operating systems.

Rock solid rhythms of Aerosmith’s legendary drummer, Joey Kramer is unbeatable. However now iPhone users can challenge their drumming skills on Kramer’s recently launched iPhone application “Hit Hard”. This move has come after celebrity Services Company Paid Inc. collaborated with Kramer to challenge iPhone fans drumming skills with a new application.

According to Keith Garde, President of Paid Inc. Boston, Aerosmith and Joey Kramer have always been about connecting with their fans in the most cutting-edge ways and this new application is another step in that direction. It consistently continues to support the band in reaching their fans in whatever platform, technologies and methods they are using.

The application also has a different feature for those users who do not want to compete with Kramer’s beat. These users can create their own beats in a freestyle play. Each level in the game has a mock lesson where users can tap the correct sequence to match his beat. Players who will be able to finish all the levels of the game can enter the high score contest for a chance to win a prize from Kramer.

According to Garde, though the application is currently available only for the iPhone and iPod touch, the company is looking forward to expand it into other smartphone platforms.

Motorola is fighting for getting back its image of a giant mobile phone maker it once was. With the introduction of Android phones, the company has shown a clear sign of its way back to prominence. Also, in order to support the company one step further, co-CEO Greg Brown and Sanjay Jha have agreed to continue taking their voluntary salary cut of 25% for 2010.

Motorola is all set to make their long-awaited comeback in the mobile space with solid plans to divide the company into two separate publicly trade entities. While Sanjay Jha is expected to take his seat as the head of the Mobile devices and Home Businesses division, Greg Brown will rein the Motorola Enterprise unit.

Though the company has showed that they have the capability to be one of the formidable players in the smartphone space, the long-term success of the company will largely depend on its ability to continue to capture mindshare in the US and around the world. At present, Motorola Droid is considered to be a good step; but it won’t be enough to carry Moto through the next year.

FCC approves Nokia C5

FCC has approved the recently announced Nokia C5. However an individual need not be too excited as this European version of the device, which 3G sings along 900 and 2100MHz3G bands. While AT&T works on 1900 and T Mobile on 1700 MHz, this move by Nokia to push the not for the USA device through FCC is obsolete, to say the least.

Not to be forgotten, the C5 is a low-cost smartphone. It comes with features like GPS, 3.2-megapixel camera, HSPA connectivity and Symbian S60. With an MSRP of $185 the model is expected to see the Finnish company moving tons of these in due course.

Motorola Opus rechristened to i1

Motorola Opus is expected to make an official announcement at the CTIA Wireless in Las Vegas next month. The iDEN based device is attracting people because of its name. Instead of Opus, Motorola will be calling it i1. This gives a hint that even i2 and i3 are in development.

It’s likely that i1 will run Android 1.5 and will be loaded with various features including 3-megapixel camera. Since it’s an iDEN device, it surely will be having push-to-talk functionality.

Motorola is expected to make easy money with this iDEN-based Android smartphone. Though it’s not a large market but at the same time the product lacks competition, which is a positive sign. As it is Motorola is ruling Nextel’s offering and by adding an Android device the brand could at least bring their margins to some higher level. The i1 is expected to be a bit more expensive than some other MOTO phones sold through Sprint-owned networks, Nextel and Boost Mobile included.

ZTE is all set to change its low-cost handset maker image and enter into the business of higher smartphone market. Android-powered smartphones will supposedly be the next big target of this Chinese company. However, the latest venture to find its way to the market is 4ZTE phones. ZTE Smooth, the Palm Pre like device has features like Android 1.6, 2.8-inch QVGA display, QWERTY keyboard, WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, FM radio, and 3g (UMTS) connectivity. ZTE Blade is another high-end device and has features like Bluetooth, Android 1.6, WiFi, FM radio, GSM/UMTS connectivity and 3.5-inch WVGA touchscreen.

ZTE Racer another Android 1.6 phone will have 3G, WiFi, GPS, and 2.-inch QVGA while ZTE Mercury, which is a look-alike of HTC Hero comes with 3.2-inch HVGA display, GPS and EDGE data.

The only problem these Android phones are expected to come across is the distribution otherwise ZTE is super committed to Android.  The ZTE Smartphones will soon be popping on every comer of Europe and US.
