Steve Jobs: Few unknown facts about the legendary genius
Steve Jobs –known to all as a charismatic pioneer, an inventor and a businessman. However, few knew the person behind Apple’s most innovative products. In his biography, titled ‘Steve Jobs’, author Walter Isaacson tells the world some unknown facts about the legendary genius.
Jobs was particular about the little details in life, not just while designing the iPhones and the iPads, but also for his personal health. He refused to use deodorant claiming that his vegan diet would naturally clear up any body odour that may arise. It was this stubborn attitude that eventually hurt him as he refused to undergo any operation to treat his then curable tumour, saying that he did not want his body affected by surgery. Further, at the time when doctors suggested he have more protein in his diet, he would fast or eat a minimum quantity of fruits.
A romantic at heart, Jobs was not the best at showing his affection. Isaacson talks about an instance when Jobs was dating folk singer Joan Baez and kept telling her about a Ralph Lauren dress she would look great in. However, the evening that he actually took her to the store for the dress, he landed up buying a few shirts for himself and suggested that she buy the dress herself.
Jobs attention to detail was well known, however, some believed he was obsessive compulsive. He was known to drive employees crazy if a few frames were removed from an ad or over the thickness of line in a calculator widget. He had as many as 100 black turtlenecks in his wardrobe from the same designer, and sported the same look at all public events. Isaacson reveals that when Steve Jobs was undergoing liver transplant, he demanded that the doctors bring him five different models of the oxygen mask to test.
Jobs had his own philosophy about managing employees. He believed that yelling and badmouthing the employees, often seven days a week and sometimes even late into the night, helped extract the best performance from the staff. While some employees believed he could have achieved the desired results by being a bit nicer, others claimed that this inspired them to do some of the best work of their careers. The book also mentions several instanced of Jobs tearing up. He would often start crying if he didn’t get his way with the product design or corporate organization. He would also tear up when he was happy and when he encountered what he considered to be the purity of spirit.
An inventor, Jobs was always looking to create and design newer things. Even when he was unwell, he would work on designing a sea-vessel, which is said to be very minimalist but at the same time very tastefully done. Given up for adoption to the Jobs family by his birth parents, Steve Jobs never responded to his birth father’s (Abdulfattah Jandali) request for a proper meeting.
Even with some of these facts being known to the world, Steve Jobs still continues to remain a mystery. His inventions revolutionized the way a user would operate a computer or a mobile phone. A legend and a genius, Steve Jobs is not a name that will be forgotten for a long time.
Apple to launch new iPhone on 4 October (USA)
Apple Inc. has announced the launch of its new iPhone on Oct 4. The US based company invited the media to an event titled “Let’s talk iPhone” at its headquarters in Cupertino, California, but did not specify any other details about the product. Analysts and industry insiders claim that the new iPhone may come with voice recognition software along with a better camera and a faster processor.
This new iPhone will be the first product launch for the company after Steve Jobs resigned in August. While Apple did not specify who will be responsible for the launch, sources claim that Tim Cook, CEO, will introduce the new product. The new iPhone will most likely come with the iOS 5, Apples latest operating system, as well as will feature Apple’s cloud-based media service, iCloud.
Further, in order to expand its reach in the market, Apple is expected to increase the network carrier for its iPhone. Recent rumours suggested that Sprint Nextel Corp. will also be offering Apple’s new iPhone in the US with unlimited data plans. Apple may also drop the price of the current iPhone model in order to make it more affordable for consumers.
Apple has reportedly sold 40 million iPhones during the first half of this calendar year, with analysts expecting as many as 110 million new iPhones to be sold in 2012. Apple’s stock has gone up by 24 percent this year, closing at $399.26 on the Nasdaq Stock Market.
Motorola supports Android OS fragmentation
Motorola Mobility’s Corporate Vice President, Christy Wyatt has claimed that although Apple’s Steve Jobs recently derided Android as suffering from OS fragmentation, Motorola unsurprisingly disagrees that fragmentation is actually a bad thing. Variation is seen as a value of Android products.
According to Wyatt, managing differentiation against fragmentation is kind of a delicate balance. Testing and certification programs do a good job of keeping APIs and implementations consistent.
Although she recommends that developers should test their apps across a range of devices – which has always been the problem with handset software development as far back as early J2me apps – she noted that Android is better at handling different screen sizes and capabilities.
From a consumer perspective, handset manufacturers varying the style of the User Interface retains differentiation in the handset market, and for the manufacturers avoids the perils of becoming just beige box manufacturers who cannot add anything to the OS supplied in the phone.
T-Mobile and Orange will sell Apple’s iPad 2 (UK)
T-Mobile in partnership with Orange will be stocking Apple’s iPad 2 when it will come to the UK later this month.
Apple’s latest device was revealed by the company’s CEO Steve Jobs yesterday as a thinner and lighter device that has a dual core processor, front and back cameras and a new version of IOS. A Wi-Fi and 3G model will be available that has got mobile operators interested, with T-Mobile and Orange saying they will both stock the 3G enabled iPad 2 when it arrives in the UK.
Jobs announced that the UK will be receiving the iPad 2 two weeks after the device makes its US debut, claiming prices will remain exactly the same as the first generation model. It is likely that mobile operators will heavily discount first generation iPads to clear their stock.
At present, only T-Mobile and Orange have confirmed that they will be flogging the iPad 2.
Apple launches iPad 2
Apple has unveiled the much-anticipated iPad 2, promising a device that is twice as fast as its predecessor. The iPad is also one third thinner and 15% lighter than the original iPad.
The announcement was made by Steve Jobs himself in a rare public appearance since his latest medical leave.
The iPad 2 will begin shipping in the US on March 11 and internationally on March 25 – originally to Japan, Australia, New Zealand, the rest of North America and 21 European countries. Apple stated that it is planning to launch in many more countries around the world in coming months.
The company added that for the US launch it will provide versions compatible with both AT&T’s GSM and Verizon’s CDMA 3G networks.
It will use a new dual-core A5 processor, and be powered by iOS 4.3. The base version will have 16GB of memory, scaling up to 64GB on the highest-end model. It will come in black and white from launch.
iPad uses the same screen as the original iPad, but has new graphics processing capabilities that Jobs stated promises a nine fold speed boost.
The device will come with two cameras, including a front-facing one capable of recording 720p HD video. The base model will have a price tag of $499 in the US, the same as the first iPad.
Apple sells 100 millionth iPhone
Steve Jobs has announced that the company recently sold its 100 millionth iPhone. He also confirmed that the company sold 15 million of its iPad tablet over the past nine months, citing the fact that Apple has its own retail stores as one of the reasons for the company’s strong sales.
When the iPhone first launched in June 2007, many questioned the long-term success of the product.
Last month, Verizon became the second U.S. carrier to sell the iPhone and some analysts have posited that Big Red has already moved 1 million units. Apple didn’t break out any carrier-specific numbers, however, by pointing out that 100 million iPhones — the company is pointing out its success in the market.
Steve Jobs’ Honorary Knighthood blocked
Apple’s CEO, Steve Jobs was reportedly blocked from receiving a Knighthood from the Queen after the former British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown blocked the application.
It is claimed by a former Labor Party politician that the offer of an honorary Knighthood was blocked by Downing Street after Steve Jobs declined an offer to speak at the Labor Party conference.
He was put forward for the Honor, which as an American citizen would not have allowed him to be known as Sir Steve – by the former Labor MP in recognition of the company’s consumer electronics.
According to reports, the proposal reached the final stages of approval at Downing Street before being blocked suddenly.
The former MP was told that the decision came as a direct result of his decision not to speak at the political rally. Having Steve Jobs appear as a speaker at the conference would have been a considerable PR coup for the Labour party, and Gordon Brown in particular.
Consumer Reports confirm Verizon iPhone 4 defect (USA)
Consumer Reports have revealed that the Apple Inc. iPhone 4 carried by Verizon Wireless suffers from a problem similar to the one that plagued AT&T Inc.’s version — it may result in dropped calls in certain areas.
After testing the phone, which was released this month, Consumer Reports stated that it won’t include the device on its list of recommended smartphones.
According to Consumer Reports, published by Yonkers, New York-based Consumers Union, the Verizon iPhone 4 closely resembles the original AT&T iPhone 4 in many positive respects which includes offering great multimedia functionality, a sharp screen and the best MP3 player they have seen on a phone. Unfortunately, it also shares with its sibling the possibility of compromised performance in low-signal conditions when used without a bumper or a case.
The group added that the iPhone, which first hit stores in 2007, has become Apple’s best-selling product. It accounted for 39% of $26.7 billion in total sales in the most recent quarter. Calls may be dropped when the phone is gripped in a way that affects the phone’s signal strength.
Consumer Reports also stated that the device performs superbly in most respects and using a case can fix the signal.
Consumer Reports similarly didn’t recommend the iPhone 4 when it was released for AT&T last year, citing an antenna design flaw that led to dropped calls. Apple Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs apologized and offered customers free cases to help fix the problem with the AT&T phones.
Steve Jobs has just 6 weeks to live
A news report has claimed that Steve Jobs has less than a couple of months to live. Apple CEO, Steve Jobs is currently on medical leave from the company.
According to reports, Mr Jobs was taken to the famous Stanford Cancer Center where he spoke to number of totally unrelated people about why he would be visiting and what would be the likely outcome based on some long distance photos they took. The report stated that Jobs is stricken with pancreatic cancer. Various doctors claimed that he had just a few weeks to live.
The Apple CEO has battled a rare, but also far less aggressive type of pancreatic cancer for the past seven years and had a liver transplant in 2009.
Although he looks weak in the photos, he is seemingly well enough to still be attending meetings with senior people around California and carrying on business as normal.
