Peru to launch M Banking in mid-2010

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Peru will reportedly launch mobile banking systems from mid-2010, reports Felipe Tam, Chief of Peru’s Superintendency of Banking, Insurance and Private Pension Funds (SBS).
The project dubbed as M Banking, is being developed with the financial support of Inter American Bank for Development (BID). “The BID has hired a consultant and we are waiting for the final inform,” said Tam.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Bharti Airtel, the Indian mobile operator, reportedly intends to bid for Millicom’s Sri Lankan operation, Tigo. The move, if successful, will create the island’s second largest mobile operator.
Bharti Airtel hasn’t yet put in a firm bid for the Tigo network but will do so in a couple of weeks, reports suggest.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Cellcom is reportedly mulling a bid for 100% stake in iDEN operator MIRS Communications. Cellcom is the latest in a long line of companies linked with a potential purchase of MIRS, which is currently a wholly-owned subsidiary of Motorola Israel. Shamrock Holdings ruled out a bid for MIRS last week, while cableco HOT-Telecommunication Systems has also been linked with the possible sale. The reports come despite a deadline for non-binding bids passing at the end of last month.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: The French government has launched tender for the 4th 3G mobile licence in the country, as it publishes the procedure’s details in the Official Journal on 01 August. The candidates who wish to bid for the licence can do so until 29 September by submitting their proposals. The contenders reportedly are ISP Free, Numericable and MVNO Virgin Mobile France (joint bid).
Arcep, the French regulator, has until the end of May 2010 to decide on proposals based on nine criteria, including the credibility of the business plan, coverage commitments and access to the network by MVNOs.

Zain is currently understood to be looking for a single trade buyer for its ex-Celtel networks across Africa.
“As far as I know, no sales process for single assets of Zain’s African operations is ongoing, but if this was the case, we would look at it,” Chief Financial Officer Gervais Pellissier said.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Mobinil, Telecom Egypt and Vodafone Egypt have submitted their respective bids to acquire Link Egypt, an information technology unit of Orascom Telecom. According to OT’ CEO, Khaled Bichara, two other unnamed firms have submitted bids before the deadline.
Bichara said five firms had already completed due diligence on Link Egypt, and that OT and consultant EFG-Hermes would begin examining the bids.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: After facing the failure in its First attempt, he Agency for Electronic Communication (AEC), Macedonia’s national telecoms regulator, has announced a new tender for two 3G operating licences. The watchdog reportedly invited bids from up to 20 international companies, as not one of them expressed interest in its previous tender. The price for which the licence is being offered is EUR5 million (USD7.1 million) each for a ten-year concession, with the possibility of extending the period. The bid winner would need to begin the operations commercially within six months of the award and ensure 50% coverage within the first year.

www.WirelessFedration.com/news: President of telecom regulator Arcep said that the government still intends to launch the tender offer for frequencies set aside for the country’s fourth mobile phone license before the end of July.

The only official candidate for the license is lliad. Numericable and Virgin Mobile France said they were considering the possibility to bid jointly.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: According to a Ugandan Newspaper (Daily Monitor), Vivendi, the French entertainment group has reportedly won the bid for Zain Africa. The bid made by Vivendi was $12 billion, sources reveal. Although the officials for both the companies have declined to comment, the sources closely reviewing the deal, unveiled that it has been completed.

The company appointed Goldman Sachs to look at strategic options for the activities, including a possible sale. The Asian operations, which include operators in Sri Lanka, Cambodia and Laos, generated revenues of $68 million and net profit of $4 million in Q1′09.
