Qualcomm appoints Doh as SVP of worldwide sales

Qualcomm has appointed Jim Doh as senior vice president of worldwide sales and as president of Qualcomm CDMA Technologies (QCT) Asia.

In his expanded role, Doh will be responsible for managing all sales efforts and customer relationships for the business unit. Doh will continue to report to executive vice president and group president Steve Mollenkopf.

Doh joined Qualcomm in 1997 and has held numerous leadership positions throughout his tenure.

He assisted to establish the Qualcomm CDMA Technologies business in Korea, Taiwan and Japan, growing the company’s in-country presence and partnerships. Prior to joining Qualcomm, Doh held various technical and business management roles at Intel and Raytheon.

HTC to offer Flyer, Wildfire S through 3 operators (Taiwan)

HTC will be offering its tablet PC Flyer and smartphone Wildfire S through Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile, and Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET).

Flyer will be available from early June and the Wildfire S from mid-May. Chunghwa will offer the Flyer for US$454.50 on a US$29.74 per month contract and the Wildfire S for US$139.60 with a US$25.99 per month plan.

FET is offering the Flyer for US$454.50 with a US$27.11 per month plan and the Wildfire S for US$192.78 with a US$20.92 per month plan.

Chunghwa, Unicom agree to swap mobile apps (Taiwan)

Chunghwa Telecom has agreed to swap mobile apps with China Unicom. Chunghwa will offer its apps on Unicom’s Wo Store and Unicom will offer its apps on Chunghwa’s Hami Apps store.

Hami Apps has around 2,000 apps available and Chunghwa will select around 100 for the initial launch on Wo Store. The number of apps on the Wo Store by Chunghwa will rise to at least 1,200 by the end of this year.

Chunghwa will offer simplified-Chinese versions of its apps in the middle of this year and will allow Chinese customers to use Alipay in Q3 to make payments. China Unicom will launch over 300 free apps on Hami Apps.

Zyxel offers cloud-based Wi-Fi system for SMBs (Taiwan)

Zyxel Communications has introduced the NWA110N-CE, a CloudEnabled Wi-Fi system for SMBs.

Zyxel’s NWA1100N-CE has combined business hardware features, including multi-operation modes, Power-over-Ethernet support and multiple SSIDs, with a cloud-based management user interface.

By adopting cloud-based resources, IT professionals can maintain, secure and manage their infrastructure remotely. Zyxel’s NWA1100N-CE is powered by PowerCloud Systems’ CloudCommand technology. With the cloud-managed services for SMBs, PowerCloud Systems has designed its systems from the ground up to meet SMBs’ needs.

By integrating the NWA1100N-CE with CloudCommand, the product will feature several enhancements, including single, streamlined interface for AP deployment and management, improved traffic management and security with VLAN tagging, one-click firmware upgrade and simultaneous configuration or pre-configuration of APs.

The product also features reporting capacities such as detailed network statistics and graphs and e-mail and SMS notifications, and security capacities including firewalled guest network to provide security against all devices connected to the guest network and user management with authentication and encryption.

The NWA1100N-CE also offers data rates of up to 300Mbps and PoE support (802.3af). For deployment, the product can be configured as an AP, bridge, repeater or a wireless client. The NWA1100N-CE also supports multiple SSIDs to assist businesses segment their network for different workgroups or provide guest access.

Zyxel’s NWA1100N-CE provides security with WPA / WPA2 and 802.1x support to protect data confidentiality. NWA1100N-CE will be generally available this June.

Three Taiwanese notebook sellers to provide tablet PCs to govt agencies

Acer, Asustek, FIC have secured bids to supply tablet PCs to the government, military, and educational agencies in the country.

According to sources, they will provide the tablet PCs in the second half. The devices will run on Android 3.0 or Windows 7 and come with a warranty for three years.

FET offers mobile movie service with CatchPlay (Taiwan)

Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET) is offering mobile video-on-demand (VoD) streaming services with CatchPlay, which provides online movies for download and DVD movies for rent in Taiwan.

According to the company, the mobile VoD service combines CatchPlay’s content with FET’s mobile platform. The operator offers the service for US$6.95 per month, US$17.44 per quarter, or US$31.42 per six months for unlimited use. A single title can be bought for US$1.36 to US$2.41 and three titles are offered for US$3.46, six titles are priced at US$5.20 and ten titles cost US$6.95.

Customers can also pay US$3.46 per month to gain unlimited access to a single channel. The service initially offers 250 movie titles and the collection will be updated each week. FET is aiming to sign-up over 100,000 users for the service by the end of this year.

Compal profit falls by 60% in Q1 (Taiwan)

Compal Electronics has reported that its net income for the first quarter slip 60 percent but FY 2010 profit rose 18 percent year-on-year.

For 2010, Compal posted consolidated sales of  US$31.01 billion, rose by 31 percent from US$23.61 billion a year earlier.

Net income was US$815.38 million, growing 18 percent from 19.80 billion, and EPS was US$0.18 versus 4.91 in 2009.

For the first quarter of 2011, Compal reported net sales of  US$5.98 billion, down 25 percent from US$8 billion in the first quarter last year.

Net profit for the quarter was down 60 percent to US$119.23 million from US$313.28 million while EPS was US$0.02 versus 1.97. Dividend for 2010 earning was set at US$0.09.

Chunghwa introduces Hami Music (Taiwan)

Chunghwa Telecom has introduced its online music store called Hami Music.  The store will initially target Android users.

Chunghwa has around 350,000 subscribers using Android handsets and hopes to attract around half of them to the service. Download prices are set between US$0.66 and US$0.90 per song and Chunghwa shares 60 percent of revenues with the content suppliers.

HTC sales rise over 110% in April (Taiwan)

HTC has reported that its revenues for April rose by 113.41% to US$1.35 billion from US$634.61 million in the same month a year earlier.

Sales from January-April totaled US$4.99 billion, an increase of 154.72% year-on-year.

Global Mobile plans to switch to LTE (Taiwan)

Global Mobile is planning to switch from WiMax to LTE when its coverage hits certain targets.

According to Global Mobile chairperson Rosemary Ho, the company’s current infrastructure and base stations are compatible with LTE.

Global Mobile plans to apply to change its licence to LTE when its coverage hits more than 70 percent, as mandated by the government. The 70 percent coverage target would require at least 1,000 base stations deployed, which Global Mobile aims to achieve by the end of this year.

However, she warned that LTE equipment is costlier than Wimax equipment which could dampen consumers’ willingness to subscribe. Global Mobile is aiming to boost its subscriber base to 160,000 this year, up from 20,000, and aims to have 250,000 subscribers next year.
