Oberthur Technologies the world’s second largest provider of Smart Card based solutions today announced the commercialization of its OMHTM (Open Market Handsets) SIM cards for CDMA (Code Development Multiple Access) networks. OMH SIM cards contain subscriber, network and service configuration data that allow subscribers the freedom to easily change and upgrade their handset, but maintain their network configuration.

Oberthur Technologies collaborated with Tata Teleservices Limited, one of India’s fastest growing private telecom service providers, and Qualcomm Incorporated, a leader in developing and delivering innovative digital wireless communications products and services based on CDMA and other advanced technologies, to introduce OMHTM SIM cards into the India market.

Olivier Leroux, Head of the Mobile Product Line for the Card Systems Division at Oberthur Technologies said, “Oberthur Technologies is the first to commercially launch OMHTM SIM cards. We are pleased to partner with industry leaders such as Tata Teleservices and Qualcomm who are enhancing the subscriber experience for Indian consumers.”

The OMHTM SIM card, referred to as a removable user identity module (R-UIM), is a state of the art smartcard that stores operator and subscriber specific configuration parameters, separate from the handset memory. By having this configuration parameters located on the OMHTM SIM card rather than the device, subscribers can more easily switch or upgrade their handsets. These cards allow CDMA network operators to increase the selection of devices and services while lowering distribution and inventory costs.

“These are exciting times in the Indian telecom space where innovation, research and development are the key to success and remain competitive in the business. In our constant effort to redefine the telecom space keeping customers at the central point, Tata Teleservices decided to partner with Qualcomm and Oberthur Technologies to further develop the Open Market Handset initiative and offer more choice to customers”, said Lloyd Mathias, Chief Marketing Officer, Tata Teleservices Limited.

“Qualcomm is pleased to work with Oberthur Technologies for its leadership as one of the first companies to develop OMH SIM cards,” said Nakul Duggal, Senior Director and OMH Project Lead, Qualcomm Corporate Engineering Services. “The OMH initiative is focused on increasing device variety by offering new channels and distribution options within the CDMA ecosystem to provide greater subscriber flexibility.”

Tata Teleservices Limited (TTSL), India’s fastest-growing pan India telecom service provider, today announced the signing of a landmark ‘Master Services Agreement for Passive Infrastructure Sharing’ with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).

Becoming the first Indian private telecom operator to enter into an agreement of this nature. The agreement which is valid for 15 years will be applicable to both Tata Teleservices Limited and Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) Limited in all of India’s 22 telecom Circles.

“This is a moment of pride for us, as we have become the first private telecom operator to enter into such a strategically important agreement with BSNL, one that will allow us to expand our telecom footprint across the country much more quickly,” Mr Madhav Joshi, President, Legal and Regulatory Affairs, Tata Teleservices Limited, said.

Airspan Networks Inc. (NASDAQ: AIRN), a leading worldwide provider of WiMAX and Wi-Fi based broadband wireless access networks, announced today that it has been awarded a nationwide WiMAX deployment contract to supply the Jordanian carrier Umniah Mobile Company, a subsidiary of the Batelco Group, with fixed and mobile WiMAX solutions. The contract was awarded to Airspan along with its distribution partner, InnoKAT.

Umniah Mobile Company, a major telecom provider in Jordan, is developing a nationwide network to provide fixed and mobile WiMAX services to commercial and residential customers. Umniah aims to be a significant WiMAX operator in Jordan by offering its customers innovation, better value and choices for fixed and mobile WiMAX wireless solutions. Airspan will supply its HiperMAX base stations, EasyST indoor and ProST outdoor subscriber terminals to Umniah who launched 2.5G wireless services in June 2005 covering the Jordanian mobile market. Umniah will use Airspan’s WiMAX technology to launch its voice, data, and high speed internet service within its already established network. Airspan’s WiMAX solution will enable Umniah to offer a bundle of voice and data services, with the addition of mobile WiMAX by software upgrade from the same platform.

Anders Rendahl, Airspan’s Vice President of Sales and General Manager of EMEA, commented, “Umniah’s selection of Airspan’s WiMAX technology is a further validation that the market demand is growing for solutions that can deliver the path to mobility now and provide wireless voice and data services to the subscriber base. We are pleased to be working with this innovative carrier in bringing WiMAX to the Jordanian market.”

Joseph Hanania, the CEO of Umniah Mobile Company, said, “We are very excited to begin deploying WiMAX technology, working with Airspan and InnoKAT. Today, Umniah is well positioned to expand its customer base using WiMAX technology which will allow us to provide the latest services to our subscribers. A dedicated customer focus approach coupled with leading technology has been key in selecting Airspan to participate in our WiMAX initiative.”

Mohammed Kateeb, InnoKAT CEO, said, “We are also excited to be part of a world class team to build the first true country-wide WiMAX network in the Middle East. Working with Airspan, a leader in WiMAX technology, as well as with an important carrier in the region like Umniah, gives us the opportunity to open the door for this technology to be implemented throughout the Middle East.”

Airspan’s WiMAX HiperMAX Base Station and EasyST Indoor WiMAX modem combine to support both Fixed 16d and Mobile 16e WiMAX System Profiles. This, together with support for 5, 7 and 10 MHz channels, ensures the solution is highly scalable, with up to 32Mbit/s per channel, and up to 12 channels per Base Station. Full support for advanced multi-channel Receiver and Transmit diversity ensures class-leading operational range and true indoor coverage.

Vodafone has deployed Airspan Networks’ HiperMAX base station and customer premise equipment (CPE) to launch its WiMAX network in Malta. Vodafone will bundle its mobile and fixed offerings to provide broadband data and VoIP services to residential and business customers. Airspan’s HiperMAX is a WiMAX base station designed for high-density deployment situations. It is well suited for this kind of deployment in dense metropolitan areas with its capabilities for software upgrades from fixed to mobile WiMAX.

According to the latest report from In-Stat, the original vendors who entered the WiMAX market – Alavarion, Aperto, Redline and Airspan – still hold the dominant market positions. However,  better-known equipment vendors such as Motorola, Nokia Siemens  and Samsung received more press coverage in 2006, for their high-profile WiMAX service provider deployments.

In-Stat’s report does expect Sprint’s network roll out to shift the market balance, as it has not selected any of those early market pioneers as an infrastructure partner.

“While the early pioneers of WiMAX should lose their market share dominance over the next couple of years, they should continue to grow their revenues, benefiting from the overall growth of the market. These vendors continue to win larger contracts with higher profile service providers,” said Daryl Schoolar, In-Stat analyst, in a statement.
