Telefonica De Argentina expects 45% increase next year

Telefonica de Argentina, the local unit of Spain’s Telefonica SA is expecting a sharp 45% jump in its number of fixed, Internet and cell phone lines in service next year.

Telefonica de Argentina is expecting its number of broadband internet connections to rise 20% from 1.4 million and its cell phone lines to grow by 10% from 16.5 million. Mobile Internet services are expected to double.

According to the company’s new President Luis Blasco Bosqued, in total, the company has 22.5 million voice and data connections after growing by 1.1 million in 2010. The company also has 4.6 million fixed lines in service.

Telefonica de Argentina is the largest telecommunications provider in Argentina and shares a virtual duopoly on fixed-line services with Telecom Argentina SA. Both companies have seen a sharp rise in sales in recent years as Internet and cell phone use has surged amid brisk economic growth.

Telefonica & NEC completes LTE trials in Argentina

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: LTE laboratory trials have been successfully completed by Telefonica along with NEC. Telefonica de Argentina was provided with a total LTE network system by NEC. The system consisted of core network systems and wireless base stations.

Telefonica requested for almost around 100 test items and all were achieved while under a 20 MHz bandwidth, including a maximum throughput of 145 Mbps while connecting with a simulator device.

A maximum throughput of 95 Mbps has been achieved by the trials using an actual LTE terminal while NEC also plans to participate in future Telefonica field trials.

Argentina seeking to renationalize telecom sector

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: 42.3% stake in Telco, a holding company that owns 24.5% of Telecom Italia had been acquired by Spain’s Telefonica in April 2007. However, the merger garnered the attention of Argentine anti-trust authorities since approximately 90% of the local telecommunications market was now controlled by Telecom Argentina and Telefonica de Argentina.

Telefonica of Spain’s stake in Telecom Argentina is diluted in numerous intermediary holdings and is thus equivalent to around 2%. Spain’s Telefonica and Telecom Italia’s merger has also been making rounds recently but both the companies have been denying the rumors.

Telecom Italia was ordered by Argentina’s Anti-Trust Commission (CNDC) in August 2009 setting a 12-month deadline for the sale.

SEC to investigate Telecom Argentina sale

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has asked Telecom Italia (TI) to provide documents about the forced sale of its 50% stake in Sofora. Sofora is the holding company that controls TI’s Argentine unit, Telecom Argentina.

According to the chief executive of Telecom Italia (TI), Franco Bernabe, SEC asks for documents the moment it starts an investigation and he also believes that investigation will not delay the sale of Telecom Argentina.

Information of communication between TI and the government of Argentina has been asked by SEC. Besides, it has also requested information on potential buyers and sanctions that the government has applied to TI in Argentina.

Spain’s Telefonica has taken 24.7% stake in the Italian firm and already owns fixed line operator Telefonica de Argentina and because of this TI’s 50% stake in Sofora violates antitrust legislation.
