LTE not necessary for Austria’s mobilkom: CFO
As the mobile industry rushes to grab the LTE network, Telekom Austria revealed on Thursday that it will be several years before it rolls out a next-generation mobile network.
According to Hans Tschuden, CFO, Telekom Austria, The Company’s HSPA+ network is still sufficient. LTE is not a necessity right now. The lower cost of upgrading to HSPA+ compared to LTE is an important consideration in mobile markets like the one in Austria, where intense competition and regulatory intervention over interconnection and roaming fees have pressured earnings. HSPA+ is very resourceful from a cost outlook because it’s a software upgrade. LTE requires capex and one has to make the necessary bandwidth available.
Telekom Austria’s mobile took over mobilkom in March 2009 and became one of the first operators all over the world to roll out HSPA+.

Telecom operators press for Brussel’s scrutiny
www.WirelessFederation.com/news: In order to to scrutinise the proposed merger of their UK mobile phone businesses, France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom are pressing for regulators in Brussels rather than London. The telecoms groups are
hopeful that European Commission’s inquiry would be shorter than one by UK competition authorities.
On the other hand, consumers feel that the proposed merger of France Telecom’s Orange UK and Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile UK, Britain’s third and fourth-largest mobile operators respectively will have a negative impact on the competition.
The two groups hope that Brussels will hold on to the case and the final say is of Brussels even if the UK authorities could ask the Commission to send the case to London. France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom are preparing the documents about the merger are under preparation and the companies may submit it to the Commission before Christmas, although it may not happen until January.
The length of the regulatory scrutiny will partly depend on whether France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom are willing to make concessions. Last month the two groups said they saw no need for major concessions, such as giving up valuable radio spectrum.
US Mobile Market consolidation not necessary- Deutsche Telekom CFO
Deutsche Telekom CFO, Timotheus Hoettges told Bloomberg News that he sees no need for further consolidation of the U.S. mobile-phone market.
He mentioned that there are four national players in the U.S. market for 300 million households, whereas in Europe, there are 350 million households with close to 70 operators.
Deutsche Telekom’s current focus in the U.S. is on expanding its 3G network. It is investing $3.5 billion euros in the network in 2009. He said that the mobile data market in the US is booming and they must participate in that now.
On the Issue of 4G networks, there is a possibility that T-mobile could provide funding in exchange for access to ClearWire’s 4G network. Verizon and AT&T are already buliding independent 4G networks.
