Globacom and AfriPay bring mobile money to Nigeria

In an attempt to bring mobile money to Nigeria, Globacom has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AfriPay, a subsidiary of United bank of Africa (UBA). Following the signing of the MoU in Lagos, Managing Director, AfriPay, Mr. Yinka Adedeji has reportedly said that their partnership with Glo will enable the bank to reach millions of Nigerians and subscribers on Glo’s network and Glo’s mobile payment platform, Glo Text Cash, through its new mobile payment product, U-Mo.

He further stated that customers on the mobile banking product will enjoy a number of benefits, ranging from non-restrictions on cash limit, money transfer and banking services from any location and they will not be required to open an account with the bank. In addition to this, he also said that mobile payment and mobile banking product will provide subscribers and customers with 24 hours banking services daily, apart from its advantage of cash transfer from one individual to another. Sources claim that in the near future, the product will be further developed to perform other services, such as payment of goods and services purchased from both big and small businesses.

 

MTN launches mobile money bill payment (Ghana)

MTN Ghana has launched the Mobile Money Bill Payment service to ease payment of electricity and DSTV bills for subscribers of the MTN Mobile Money.

According to the company, the new Mobile Money Bill payment service will offer DSTV subscribers and clients of the Electricity Company of Ghana the convenience and ease of paying bills. MTN Mobile Money, the first mobile money service to be introduced into the country in July 2009, had over 1.8 million subscribers currently.

It added that the service was aimed at providing convenience to mobile phone users in the management of their monetary transactions.

According to Mr. Eli Hini, Mobile Money Commercial Senior Manager, Mobile Money Bill Payment is designed to give MTN subscribers the opportunity to pay their DSTV and Electricity bills through their mobile handsets without having to travel to the offices of the service providers. The MTN Mobile Money Bill Payment service is ideal for all categories of persons who consider convenience as an important ingredient in their daily activities.

He added that MTN, as a technologically savvy network, had endeared itself to its customers through the deployment of state of the art technology to address their communication, business and social needs.

Non-registered MTN Mobile Money customers can pay their bills at the nearest Mobile Money Authorised Merchants across the country.

Mobile Money transactions can also be done through Cal Bank, Ecobank, Fidelity Bank, Guarantee Trust Bank, Intercontinental Bank, Merchant Bank, UBA, Stanbic Bank and Zenith Bank.
