Tele2 expanding 3G coverage (Latvia)

Tele2 Latvia has revealed that it has begun construction of a new type of base station in its regions of operation.

According to the company, it has started to launch the new equipment, which includes remote radio units, across a number of districts, with the first five up and running in: Aizpute, Bikstos, Mersraga, Roja and Ugale. It will look to extend the reach of its 3G network in the Kurzeme region, and has claimed that the new hardware will allow it to speed up the extension of its footprint while also allowing for significant cost savings.

Tele2′s UMTS network currently offers customers access to downlink speeds of up to 10.2Mbps, while upload rates are capped at 2Mbps.

During the coming year the cellco aims to boost download speeds on the wireless network to 21Mbps, while 3G coverage is expected to reach 90% by end-2011.

German mobile operator E-Plus, a subsidiary of Dutch telecoms group KPN, has announced it has doubled its subscriber base within the last five years to reach 20 million at the start of November.

According to the company it had a subscriber base of 19.899 million, of which 65.4% were on a pre-paid basis on 30 September. It will continue expanding its mobile internet network to work towards offering the country’s best data network by 2012.

According to reports, E-Plus hopes to use 900MHz frequencies for expanding its UMTS network in rural municipalities in Pfalz, Mecklenburg and Uckermark.

According to the company, the expansion would enable it to offer mobile broadband services at HSPA+ speeds to the households in these areas. The expansion requires approval from the Federal Network Agency (FNA), however, as 900MHz frequencies are reserved for the provision of GSM services and not for UMTS.

Verizon Wireless is developing a new solution that will allow its CDMA subscribers to access voice and mobile data services at the same time.

According to reports, Apple is making an iPhone for Verizon’s CDMA network and that Verizon will launch the phone early next year, which would break AT&T Mobility’s grip on the popular smartphone.

The main difference between Verizon’s network and AT&T’s UMTS network is that AT&T subscribers can access voice and data services simultaneously in which Verizon lacks behind.

According to Biran Higgins, Verizon’s executive director for ecosystem development, the carrier is working on making its network capable of handling voice and data at the same time.

According to Brad Shewmake, a spokesman for the CDMA Development Group, a solution that will allow CDMA subscribers to access voice and data at the same time will be commercially available in the first half of 2011.  August 2009 the CDG announced that specification, called SVDO. The new service will allow CDMA2000 devices to access EV-DO packet data services while in an active 1X circuit-switch voice call.
