As T-Mobile USA increases its presence in the Ohio/Kentucky and Western Pennsylvania region, the company has appointed Larry Dolot as the region’s first vice president general manager, responsible for all sales across all channels in the region. Dolot, who is based in the Cleveland area, is also responsible for profitable customer growth and retention, with full profit and loss (P&L) accountability in Ohio, Kentucky, and Western Pennsylvania.

“Larry is a veteran retailer working with outstanding brands such as Blockbuster, Borders and Target and he has consistently performed in his role as director of retail since joining T-Mobile a couple of years ago”

T-Mobile began its regionalization efforts earlier this year to enable its vice presidents/general managers to invest in and run their markets as individual business units. Dolot will have the ability to influence network investment, store locations, customer offers and local marketing programs.

Dolot joined T-Mobile in 2009. Prior to joining the company, he was a division director for Borders, where he was responsible for 19 US retail stores with 625 associates and ten store locations throughout Michigan. Before Borders, Dolot served as a store general manager at Target, Inc. He also spent more than 15 years at Blockbuster, Inc., where he started as a store manager and rose through the ranks to manage marketing and operations for his district before being promoted to regional director. As a director, his regional responsibilities grew to 120 stores. Dolot then spent time developing the Game Rush Division of Blockbuster, where his region was ranked first nationally in game trades and pre-sell results.

“Larry is a veteran retailer working with outstanding brands such as Blockbuster, Borders and Target and he has consistently performed in his role as director of retail since joining T-Mobile a couple of years ago,” said Pancho Hall, senior vice president, central area, T-Mobile USA.

The Ohio/Kentucky and Western Pennsylvania region, which has 823,000 customers, consists of 17 retail stores, 69 branded locations, an additional 166 partner stores as well as 558 national retail partner stores. The company employs approximately 830 employees in the Ohio/Kentucky and Western Pennsylvania region across retail stores, enterprise sales, mid-market – B2B, small business – B2B, operations, finance, engineering, local marketing, human resources and other various functions.

“T-Mobile customers in Ohio, Kentucky, and Western Pennsylvania are fortunate to have someone local, like Larry, who knows what makes the area unique, and is dedicated to ensuring local customers receive the award-winning T-Mobile service they expect,” added Hall.

Dolot earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State University. He also received a Doctorate’s degree from William Scholl College of Medicine in Illinois. In his spare time, Dolot enjoys traveling with his wife and two children. He also enjoys attending sporting events and going to the theater. He also likes to spend his free time reading all types of literature for both personal and professional development.

Apple has unveiled a new free service that allows users to share calendar entries, songs and other files among their devices more easily.

The company also announced new software to make Mac computers behave more like mobile devices and Apple’s mobile devices more like rival smartphones. It announced a service called iCloud.

An iCloud account will store user information from several devices, including iPhones and iPads, and make sure the same contacts, calendar events and files are available on all of them. It also backs up the data on Apple’s servers. It mimics Google’s Docs system for online files, and products from smaller online-storage companies like Dropbox.

iCloud will also allow customers to store their music online. Buy a song on iTunes once, and it will be available on up to 10 devices. The basic service will be free for now and replaces a $99-a-year Apple service called MobileMe.

For $25 a year, iTunes will be able to scan a computer’s hard drive for music files that have been converted from CDs. If the same songs are available in the iTunes store, they’ll be added to the iCloud locker. iCloud could give users a wide array of music for their iPhones, iPads and Wi-Fi-capable iPods, without having to connect them to their home PCs to transfer songs. Google Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. have launched similar services.

Earlier, Apple unveiled an operating system update for Mac computers called Lion. With it, Apple is expanding the ways finger-touches can be used to control the software. For instance, with the swipe of the fingers over the Mac trackpad, the user can switch from one program to another.

Apple is adapting more of its programs to run in a special full-screen mode, in addition to the traditional “window” mode. Lion will be available to consumers next month for $30. A preview version was made available Monday to software developers.

Apple also unveiled updates to its software for iPhones and iPads. It will present notifications of new emails, missed calls and other events in a more intelligent fashion, reminiscent of the way Google Inc.’s Android smartphone software already does. The software will present all pending notifications in a list, accessible with the swipe of a finger.

The new mobile software, iOS 5, will have a newsstand for newspapers and magazines that you subscribe to on iPad. New issues are automatically downloaded and placed there.

Apple also announced greater integration with Twitter, so that you can tweet photos, for instance, directly from a photo app.

iMessage in iOS 5 brings the functionality of iPhone messaging to all of iOS devices – iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. iMessage allows users to send encrypted text messages, photos, videos or contact information to other iOS 5 devices over Wi-Fi or 3G. The software would be available to consumers in the fall.

Renesas Electronics America Inc., a premier provider of advanced semiconductor solutions, today announced the availability of its eight new 32-bit V850 microcontrollers (MCUs) in the existing V850 J Series. These new V850ES/Jx3-L MCUs are an extension of the successful low-power V850ES/Jx3-L 32-bit MCUs that were introduced in early 2010 and are designed for low-power, portable applications with high-density memory from 768 kilobytes (KB) flash/80KB RAM to 1 megabyte (MB) flash/80KB RAM to support increasing memory demand. The new MCUs achieve industry-leading, low power consumption with built-in large capacity memory, and four of these high memory-density MCUs are equipped with a USB 2.0 function interface to support communications. To demonstrate the low-power capability, Renesas Electronics America is offering a give-away promotion of a V850ES/Jx3-L Low Power Demonstrator Kit, which enables users to measure current consumption of different MCU operation modes and illustrates many features supporting low-power system design.

Ideal for applications such as portable healthcare equipment and healthcare systems, especially portable measurement and monitor devices such as blood glucose meters, can take advantage of the low power to extend battery life and utilize the large flash memory for data storage and increasing application needs. USB support enables healthcare systems to support patient-doctor information exchanges, like what the Continua Alliance standard provides. Moreover, the 32-bit processing power can support graphic computation for different displays from segmented LCD to dot-matrix and OLED.

Software complexity continues to increase in many applications. Product designers are faced with difficult design decisions such as extending a design cycle to reducing software size or paying for extra external memory to shorten design time. The high-density Flash memory eliminates this design dilemma as Renesas Electronics’ V850 MCUs with up to 1MB Flash memory can support many applications without resorting to external memory.

In conjunction with the product announcement, Renesas Electronics America is offering a give-away promotion for a V850ES/Jx3-L Low Power Demonstrator. This kit utilizes a V850ES/JG3-L MCU with 512KB of Flash memory to provide a platform that demonstrates the different standby modes. The kit supports current consumption measurements with the use of an ampere meter, and also demonstrates RAM retention and real-time clock operation in the lowest power mode. To register for a free kit (while supplies last) and to find more information about the give-away promotion, visitwww.am.renesas.com/V850JX3LLPD. (NOTE: This link is case sensitive.)

Key features of the V850ES/JG3-L MCUs

  • (1) Large-capacity on-chip memory contributes to a reduction in system costs by eliminating external memory

The new MCUs provide either 768 KB or 1 MB of on-chip flash memory and 80 KB of on-chip RAM. Compared to earlier products, these devices can help to reduce the effort required to optimize software to fit into a small Flash size and eliminate the need for costly external memory.
  • (2) High-speed processing achieved with the industry’s top class of low power consumption

These new devices achieve a power consumption of 0.9 milliwatts (mW) per 1 MIPS (Note 1) at 20 megahertz (MHz). Furthermore, while providing improved peripheral functionality, such as USB 2.0 and real-time counter functions, these devices achieve a low current consumption of 0.7 µA (microamps) (with only the real-time counter operating) in standby mode. These MCUs also support 2.0 volt (V) low-voltage operations when operating at 2.5 MHz, contributing to longer battery operating times in portable and battery-operated electronic equipment.

  • (3) Easy reuse of existing software assets from other V850 J Series devices

With the introduction of these new products, Renesas Electronics’ V850 J Series now includes a total of 125 products ranging from 16 KB to 1 MB of flash memory, from 8 KB to 80 KB of RAM, and from 40 to 144 pins. Since it is easy to reuse software assets within the same series, the V850 J Series devices are powerful and scalable MCUs, shortening development periods and reducing development costs.

More information about the Renesas V850 J Series products can be found at http://www.am.renesas.com/v850. Main specifications of the V850ES/JG3-L MCUs can be found at http://am.renesas.com/press/news/2011/news20110524_s.jsp.

Pricing and Availability

Samples of Renesas Electronics’ new V850ES/JG3-L MCUs are available now with pricing dependent on memory capacity and package type. For example, an MCU equipped in a 100-pin LQFP package with 1 MB of flash memory in 10K resell units is priced at US$6.38 per unit. Mass production is scheduled to begin in July 2011 and is expected to reach a combined volume of 3,000,000 units per month with all eight products by FY2012. (Pricing and availability are subject to change without notice.)

  • (Note 1) MIPS: The ability to execute one million instructions per second. The Dhrystone benchmark is a program used to evaluate arithmetic performance in computers.

Reports have it that Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha acknowledged the company still has an image problem with consumers.

According to Jha, while its products are now known for their quality and trustworthiness, they aren’t what people aspire to buy. It’s important to make (the brand) sing a little more in an aspirational way. Motorola could have done a better job promoting and explaining the benefits of the company’s two recent flagship products, the Atrix smartphone and the Xoom tablet.

The Atrix phone, which was sold through AT&T, didn’t perform as well as Jha liked, he acknowledged. But he stated that the handset did better than people were expecting. The Atrix was hamstrung because it was bundled with its key accessory, a laptop dock; at a price that critics felt was too high.

The company also suffered a delay in its 4G smartphone, the Droid Bionic, as well as the 4G component to the Xoom tablet. Jha stated that it had made progress on 4G and plans to release the products in the second half.

As part of its turnaround, the company is looking to new areas, both geographically and through different segments. Jha added that the company plans to put out more unique devices for the China and Latin America markets because of the growth in the area. He added he expects a stronger presence in Europe in the fourth quarter, when he plans to ramp up the company’s marketing budget in the region. Jha reiterated that the company is focused on staying with Google’s mobile operating system, Android.
