www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Huawei, a leader in providing next-generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, today announced that it has been selected by Grameenphone (GP), a subsidiary of Telenor, to deploy Bangladesh’ s first solar-powered base transceiver stations (BTS).

Huawei will install its fourth-generation base stations, using a solar and diesel generator hybrid power solution to provide mobile connectivity in rural areas. The base stations will primarily be powered by harnessing solar energy without having to be linked to an electricity grid. The diesel generator will be used as a backup. (more…)

Essar, which bagged a Ugandan wireless network operator concession in June 2009, wants to combine forces with Warid and take a majority stake in the merged entity. The report also suggested that Essar is planning a similar tie-up with Warid in the Republic of Congo.

Mobilink leads the market with a subscriber base of 28.812 million from 28.381 million in April. Telenor Pakistan has extended its second place position to 20.481 million customers, from 20.107 million. Ufone secures third place with 19.853 million subscribers, up from 19.712 million in April. Followed to this Warid with 17.651 million customers and Zong had 6.263 million at the end of May. The subscribers of Istaphone dropped to 75,662 in May from 137,568 in April. Mobile density is reportedly 57.90 %, up from 57.10% in April.

Mobilink emerged as the market leader with a subscriber base of 28.282 million rising from 28.240 million a month earlier. Telenor took the second position as its subscriber base passes 20 million mark, up from 19.985 million. Ufone’s subscriber base which stood at 19.612 million in March rose to 19.713 million. Whereas Warid posted 17.511 million subscribers versus 17.376 million in March. Zong, the China Mobile subsidiary, ended April with 6.129 million subscribers, up from 5.980 million in March. Mobile penetration in the country stood at 57.10% of the population in April, versus 55.90% at 2008 start.

Mobile density in February has grown to 56.80% from 56.50%. Mobilink tops the chart with 28.240 million subscribers from 28.116 million in February. Telenor Pakistan has extended its second place position to 19.985 million subscribers, from 19.842 million in February. Ufone bags third position, subscriber base totals to 19.610 million, up from 19.497 million in February. Followed to this is Warid with a subscriber base of 17.375 million. Zong ended March with 5.980 million subscribers.

Mobilink, the market leader, saw a drop in mobile subscriber base which fell from 28.315 million to 28.116 million whereas Telenor jumped to the second position with a subscriber base of 19.842 million, up from 19.657 million in January. Ufone grabbed the third position with 19.497 million subscribers, up from 19.415 million in January followed by Warid which ended February’09 with a subscriber base of 17.251 million. Zong stood at the last position with 5.979 million subscribers.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news : Pakistan’s mobile subscriber base bounced back to its growth level in the month of January driven by the campaign run by the regulator to register subscribers.
According to the figures revealed by PTA, the mobile subscriber base in Pakistan grew to 90.703 million at January-end, rising from 89.907 million in December.
Country’s leading mobile operator, Mobilink’s subscriber base dipped to 28.315 million in January from 28.480 million in December whereas Telenor experienced a rise in its subscriber base from 19.388 million in December to 19.657 million in January. Ufone retained its third position with a subscriber base of 19.415 million, rising from 19.301 million in December. Warid and Zong followed Ufone with a subscriber base of 17.144 million and 5.852 million respectively.

According to the statistics from market regulator PTA, Pakistan’s subscriber base drops by 0.1% to 90.41 million in November. The figures in October were 90.51 million. Mobilink had 30.06 million in its kitty, lost 827,000 customers during November, followed by Ufone with 19.1 million. Telenor stands at third position with 18.88 million subscribers, followed by Warid with 16.66 million subscribers. Zong’s subscribers have reached the mark of 5.39 million, while Instaphone subscribers remained sturdy at 321,134. Mobile teledensity was constant at 56.20% in November.

Subscribers can select and deselect up to five Warid numbers for free calls simply by mentioning their selected numbers through a text message to 129. Warid’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Faisal Ejaz Khan, said ‘Warid has the largest segment of Post-paid subscribers in Pakistan and we wanted to facilitate their mobile phone communications with their associates and loved ones. Bangladesh’s subscriber base experiences a fall during the month of September which called for the weakest month for the three leading mobile operators of the country, reports BTRC.
According to BTRC reports, the active mobile subscriber base saw a decline of nearly 3 lakh in the month of September and the total number reached  45Mn in contrast with the subscriber base of 45.4 Mn at August end.
According to Mehbub Chowdhury, chairman of South Asia Mobile Forum, the sector is still growing. “Unregistered SIM cards are being disconnected. It is a good sign,” Chowdhury said.

Talking about the operators, Grameenphone individually saw a fall in its subscriber base to 2.82 crore at September end in comparison to 2.84 crore in August. Same was with Baglalink whose subscriber base fell from 11.7Mn at August end to 11.4Mn in September. Aktel also saw a decline in it’s subscriber base to 7.663Mn in contrast with 8.140Mn at August end.

Operators like Warid, Teletalk and CityCell saw a rise in their subscriber base, as Teletalk added 0.01Mn new subscribers in September, CityCell got 0.06Mn.
