Bharti Airtel launches Internet TV service in India

Bharti Airtel has launched an Internet TV service that will enable its broadband customers to access a range of live and video-on-demand (VoD) content via their PCs.

Service called Airtel broadband TV will offer three tariffs starting at US$1.09 per month for three channels, up to US$2.20 per month for 28 streamed channels, 19 VoD channels and 12 movie channels. The service will offer a range of content including news, entertainment, documentaries and music.

According to the company, customers will not have to pay for the extra bandwidth consumed when accessing Airtel TV, with exception of users in Punjab and Noida. The service offers consumers a low-cost way to access VoD content since it does not require them to buy a set-top-box or IP-enabled TV.

Bharti Airtel claimed it is revolutionizing the TV watching experience.

According to Girish Mehta, Chief Marketing Officer of Bharti’s telemedia services division, this initiative is part of their larger commitment to offer an enhanced broadband experience to their customers. They will soon be adding more content under news, soap and infotainment categories.

Zain Jordan enables mobile TV with the launch of 3G mobile broadband

Zain launches 3G mobile broadband service in Jordan following an investment of $120 million.

The HSPA+ based service, which will enable mobile TV, video-on-demand, and social media use is being launched across all the governorates of Jordan, providing 97% coverage of the Kingdom’s populated area.

According to Dr Abdul Malek Al Jaber, Chief Executive of Zain Jordan, the new technology will provide a reliable, high speed service of up to 21Mbps in its initial phase, with speeds reaching 42Mbps at a later stage.

He added that Zain is executing its strategy with a focus on investing in innovative applications and content development through mobile phones in a way that matches the needs of the local community and is in line with its culture, thus helping enhance knowledge and build communication. The company’s target is to reach 500,000 users of the technology by the end of 2012. As the service covers remote areas in Jordan that were not provided with internet services, the company expects the internet penetration in the country to increase.

According to Telecommunications Regulatory Commission figures, the mobile penetration in Jordan had reached 106% by the end of the third quarter in 2010. Zain Jordan acquired the Kingdom’s second licence to operate a 3G mobile network just last month, following the expiry of the exclusivity deal between the government and Jordan Telecom Group (JTG) on 14 February, 2011.

Samsung is first to mobile 4G

Samsung has demonstrated wireless technology that delivers 1Gbit/s to stationary clients, and 100 Mbit/s to clients moving at up to 70 miles per hour.

In the demo, a bus travelled at 37 miles per hour while the technology delivered video on demand, a live broadcast and Internet access simultaneously. The press release did not specify how it was achieved.

The company has promised the technology – in which it has invested $100 million – will be in handsets by the end of 2008, and in commercial services by 2010, but it is not clear how it will be offered through products and standards. The quoted speeds are roughly 50 times greater than those of mobile WiMax.

Samsung also claimed 3.5Gbit/s to a device moving at 5km/hour in a lab test.
