STT to buy stake in U Mobile & VNPT

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Malaysian cellco U Mobile stake will be taken up by Singapore Technologies Telemedia. The announcement for the strategic partnership agreement will be made by the two companies on Monday.

NTT DoCoMo and KTF were the earlier partners of U Mobile which exited the company and now ST Telemedia is widely expected to become the latest foreign investor in U Mobile.

10% stake in VNPT Global, the offshore arm of Vietnam’s VNPT Group has also been announced by ST Telemedia.

However, financial terms of the deal are still not disclosed. VNPT Global operates in Singapore, Hong Kong, USA and the Czech Republic.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: With an annual growth of approximately 98% on a like-for-like basis, 6.3 million customers has been added by Hong Kong based Hutchison Telecom, taking its customer base to approximately 12.8 million. The relaunch of the operators business in Vietnam and ongoing expansion of the network coverage in Indonesia paved the way for this massive expansion in the subscribers’ numbers.

Larger Indonesia operation and the revenue generated by the newly launched GSM services in Vietnam led to the rise in the revenue by 2.7% year-on-year to US$239 million. With the disposal of the Group’s entire indirect stake in Israel’s Partner Communications, ¬the net profit for the year increased from US$239 million to US$817 million.

According to Dennis Lui, Chief Executive Officer of Hutchison Telecom, 2009 saw the Group unlock significant shareholder value again and the company has created, maximized and delivered value for its shareholders over the five years since listing – an achievement that has been based on pursuing carefully chosen opportunities with a measured approach. Mr. Lui also revealed that Hutchison will continue to work on building out its principal growth markets to a fully competitive state.

Hutchison Whampoa, a majority shareholder in the company is currently in the process of being taken off the stock market.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Viettel, the military-owned telecoms company of Vietnam has expressed its plan to become the third 3G W-CDMA provider of the country by March, 2009. According to the director of Viettel’s HCMC branch, Tran Minh Huy, next generation services will be launched commercially once trials in more than 20 provinces have been concluded.

100,000 3G base stations during 2010 will be established by the firm in this regard.

Earlier, CDMA-based services in October and December 2009 had been launched by rival mobile operators Vinaphone and Mobifone respectively.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Emphasizing its commitment towards the disaster hit Haiti, Vietnam’s largest cellular network operator by subscribers, Viettel has announced to continue the planned investment amidst catastrophic damage due to earthquake. Viettel will invest USD60 million to supplement Teleco’s USD40 million investment in the project.

According to deputy general director of Viettel, Nguyen Manh Quan, earlier this year, the company inked a deal to partner Haitian incumbent fixed line operator Teleco in a project installing a 2,000km terrestrial fibre-optic cable network which would bring broadband internet access to remote parts of the island nation.

Just before the lethal earthquake struck the country, Viettel has been on the verge of completing a deal to acquire a majority stake in Haiti’s cash-strapped PSTN provider in January.

Aktel which is the third largest operator, with 9.3 million customers at end-December is owned by Axiata and its listing, comes amid huge demand for stock in the no. 1 cellco GrameenPhone.

According to Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) chairman, Ziaul Haque Khondker, as price volatility in Grameenphone shares has appeared during the last few days’ trading; the commission has stopped the financial adjustment facilities to bring back stability in prices of the company.

Meanwhile, Vietnam’s dominant cellco MobiFone has taken its long-delayed IPO plans off the backburner, reportedly hiring Credit Suisse to manage its local listing.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: 52 % year-on-year rise in revenue in the year ended December 31, 2009, has been reported by Vietnam’s second largest wireless operator by subscribers, MobiFone, reaching VND27.4 trillion (USD1.48 billion).

However, pre-tax profit of the company fell 3.4% compared to 2008 to VND5.6 trillion. The net income of the company is not yet declared. The company is targeting revenue of VND34 trillion in 2010. According to the MobiFone, it is quickly preparing for the privatization process this year in an attempt to improve competitiveness.

It was revealed in 2008 that that in an initial public offering (IPO), 15% tranche would be sold to a strategic investor and 15% to the public. Even after IPO, 19% of the stake might also be sold reducing state-owned Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications’ (VNPT’s) stake to 51%.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Vimpelcom and Ukrainian operator Kyivstar merger has been approved by Commission on Foreign Investments. The announcement has been made by head of Russia’s Federal Anti-Monopoly Service.

As per the deal, Alfa Group and Norwegian group Telenor will pool their holdings in the two firms to establish a new US-listed, Netherlands-based operator, Vimpelcom Ltd.

Integrated mobile services to consumers in Russia, Ukraine and other CIS countries, as well as Georgia, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos will be provided by the united company. Vimpelcom Ltd will seek to expand its operations in Europe, Asia and Africa after its establishment.

Telenor and Alfa Group, the two shareholders of Vimpelcom, have already agreed to combine common assets in the two cellular operators to create a new US-listed operator, thus, ending years of legal disputes between the two firms.

The proposed company will be based in Netherlands and will provide integrated mobile services to consumers in Russia, Ukraine and other CIS countries, as well as Georgia, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Vietnamese telecoms operator EVN Telecom has seeked Ministry of Information and Communications permission to share third-generation mobile network facilities with other wireless operators.

Sharing 3G infrastructure, by allowing national roaming on the mobile networks of its rivals, will allow EVN to cut investment costs by up to one-third.

According to Chief of EVN’s IT-Telecom department, Nguyen Thanh Lam, EVN is facing many difficulties because big networks refuse EVN’s roaming on their networks, however, they are ready for international roaming which is very irrational.

A petition has been filed by EVN to the MIC to cut connection fees for international VoIP services by 50%.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: With an 80% year-on-year increase, Viettel’s 2009 full-year revenue reached VND60 trillion (USD3.2 billion). 60% increase in the turnover is eyed by the Vietnamese military-owned telecoms company in 2010. Besides, the company is also planning to invest in a total of 15 countries by 2015.

Cambodia and Laos also receives service from Viettel with revenue from these markets reaching USD70 million in 2009. An agreement with Apple is also on the verge of finalization after which Viettel may see the launch of its iPhone in Vietnam from March, thus, becoming the country’s official distributor of the handset.
