Mobile operator MegaFon along with State-owned telecommunications company Rostelecom, have reportedly signed an agreement with Scartel to offer 4G services in Russia. According to reports, the agreement with Scartel, which operates under the brand ‘Yota’, will enable the two operators to act as mobile virtual network operators (MVNO) for offering 4G services.

As per sources, as part of the agreement, Yota would use Rostelecom and MegaFon’s infrastructure, in exchange for its 4G network. Further, industry analysts have reportedly said that as Scartel is the only company in Russia which has built a 4G network, the two operators will gain significant lead in providing users with 4G services as compared to TeleSystems and VimpleCom.

VimpleCom, the third largest telecom operator in Russia, has reportedly said that any consolidation in the telecom industry in Russia will have to involve Tele2 as there will be no consolidation among the top three wireless operators of the country.

Mobile TeleSystems is the leading operator in the country followed by MegaFon and VimpleCom. Tele2 is currently the fourth largest player serving over 20 million customers. As per sources, Jo Lunder, CEO, VimpleCom said that the outcome of the 4G spectrum auction would be crucial in deciding the future performance of the operators.

He added that VimpelCom’s biggest operational challenge is to improve its performance in its Russian home market. As per reports, the CEO also said that the focus of the firm, which also has operations in parts of Asia and Africa, as well as in Italy and Canada, is more on cash generation and less on building subscriber and revenue market share.

According to reports, Lunder also said that they are very optimistic with regards to Wind and the Italian market, having secured good spectrum for 4G in Italy, and expect it to develop into an advanced data market.

If reports are to be believed, Naguib Sawiris, chairman of Orascom Telecom said his holding company Weather Investments was talking to telecoms group Vimpelcom about a merger and was open to talks with others. This was the first time Sawiris has confirmed the talks after reports about the merger came.
According to Sawiris, the company is not only talking to them, but is talking to anybody. We have two things on our agenda right now – solving the Algerian issue and, second, finding a good partner for the group.
An earlier attempt by Sawiris to sell assets to South Africa’s MTN broke down after Algerian government refused to let Orascom pass on its unit Djezzy.
Djezzy, Orascom’s main revenue earner, was the deal’s crown jewel, and brokers and bankers worry intervention from the Algerian government could overshadow another deal attempt.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Zambia’s civil society organizations have pressurized the Government to release the valuation report it commissioned to sell its majority stakes in a fixed line incumbent Zambia Telecommunications Company (Zamtel).

According to Fackson Shamenda, former Zambia Congress of Trade Union president, there has not been much transparency in the sale of Zamtel and with the release of the information the potential concerns over the sales will be cleared.

Earlier this year the government had appointed RP Capital to evaluate the telco’s assets, after deciding to sell 75% stake in Zamtel. However they never released the report. This led to complaints saying that there has been no transparency in the process.

According to The Zambia Development Agency (ZDA), eight companies including Portugal Telecom, Orascom Telecom and Vimpelcom have pre-qualified for the stake sale, and those firms are due to complete due diligence today, with bids due by midday. The ZDA will release the identity of those companies that have submitted bids for the stake and after reviewing the bids announce the shortlisted candidates on January11.

Russian cellco Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) has warned its rival Vimpelcom and its shareholder, Norwegian group Telenor, against buying Sky Mobile, a Kyrgyz cellco, whose assets it disputes in court. MTS has sent letters to Vimpelcom and Telenor saying it may take legal action against whoever buys Sky Mobile, owned by billionaire Mikhail Fridman’s telecoms arm Altimo. Altimo is also the single biggest investor in Vimpelcom, owning a 43.8% stake. MTS has filed a lawsuit against Altimo for at least USD150 million over alleged improprieties concerning the Bitel takeover, but Altimo denies any wrongdoing. Neither Telenor nor Altimo had any comment, while Vimplecom CEO Alexander Izosimov called the affair ‘a soap opera’ with ‘Altimo saying one thing, MTS saying something totally different.’ He added that Kyrgyzstan would be an interesting market to enter, although his firm would not wish to get bogged down in litigation.Sky Mobile is the leading Kyrgyz cellco at the end of March 2007, with an estimated 775,000 subscribers.
