Chief executive Eric Hertz said that while the cellco’s network was 3G capable, the service will not be on offer until the H1′10: ‘As we turn on [the network] and optimise it, it will take some time to make sure the quality is good… There will be a strategic and sequenced roll-out of additional services.’
The operator intends to introduce services based on W-CDMA platform with built in HSPA+ evolution, capable of delivering peak download speeds of 4Mbps.

The net income is down from NZD713 million (USD481 million) in FY07/08 to NZD483million a year later. This drop is driven by a 20% increase in depreciation and amortisation expenses, up to NZD917 million at the end of June. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) plunged by 7% year-on-year, down to NZD1.77 billion. Revenues dropped by NZD86 million over the course of the year to NZD5.59 billion, while operating expenses grew marginally to NZD3.81 billion, up from NZD3.78 billion at the end of June 2008.
Its W-CDMA based ‘XT’network, which was launched on 29 May 2009, has gained 165,000 subscribers in its first two months of operation. Although, there was a decline of 26,000 net subscribers to Telecom’s overall mobile networks.

It is further reported that the contract was signed last May and that network deployment should be completed by August. The deal also entails the nationwide expansion of the cellco’s GSM network. The contract is valid for four years. As per the deal, Ericsson will supply a complete W-CDMA/HSPA network, including radio access network (RAN) and modernisation of the existing packet-core network. The telco is hoping that the upgradation will provide the necessary network capacity and functionality needed to handle anticipated future growth of mobile broadband services in a cost-effective manner.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: ZTE Corp, Chinese vendor has won two UMTS network supply contracts, one with Spice Nepal Private Ltd (SNPL, or Mero Mobile) and the other with SkyTel in Mongolia. As per the deal with the Nepalese firm, ZTE will build a W-CDMA network covering six main zones in the country with Phase I of the project scheduled to be completed by October 2009. ZTE will launch nationwide commercial UMTS network for SkyTel in Mongolia.

The companies selected the full touch-panel model as an ideal offering for users seeking a versatile, stylish handset. DOCOMO will sell the handset in Japan as the docomo PRO series(TM) T-01A (officially announced on May 19) and Telefonica will sell it in Spain as the TG01.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: The world’s third positioned, mobile handset maker, LG. has been selected to supply third generation (3G) mobile phones to all three carriers in China. As Chinese operators roll out the long-waited advanced mobile services this year, the market for 3G handsets in China is estimated to more than double to 30 million units in 2010 from 14 million this year, LG reportedly said.
LG is also set to provide about one third of the 3G handsets China Telecom (0728.HK) needs this year, LG further said. China Unicom, which intends to provide WCDMA-based 3G services, has also picked LG to supply 3G phones.
www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Motorola, the telecoms equipment vendor, has grabbed the commercial W-CDMA contract with the Chinese mobile service provider China Unicom. Under the contract, Motorola will provide China Unicom with W-CDMA radio access network equipment, packet switched core network (PS core), and 2G/3G interoperability functions, enabling an integration of China Unicom’s GSM and W-CDMA networks.
Motorola will also help China Unicom to offer 3G services in H1′09 to the Chinese mobile subscribers.
