Vodafone Germany launches hybrid TV platform

Vodafone Germany has officially launched its hybrid television service, Vodafone TV. The service is based on the company’s Vodafone TV Center box. The service allows customers to receive analogue cable and digital satellite channels alongside Vodafone TV’s IPTV offering, Videothek, available over its DSL network.

The box, which comes with a 320GB hard drive, will automatically select the best possible reception.

The company’s starter package offers 50 television channels plus twelve High Definition (HD) channels. It is available as a triple-play package bundled with broadband access at download speeds of up to 16Mbps and unlimited calls to domestic fixed lines for US$54 per month.

Vodafone delays launch of German TV platform (UK)

Vodafone Germany, a subsidiary of UK-based telecoms group Vodafone has reportedly postponed the commercial launch of its new TV platform while the service undergoes consumer trials.

In July 2010 Vodafone Germany’s CEO Fritz Joussen had stated that the company would launch the new television service, known as Vodafone TV, by the end of the year. However, Vodafone has opted for an initial low-key launch in order to test the system with different platforms during real-time operations.

According to Vodafone spokesman Paul Gerlach, they have started Vodafone TV on 1 December 2010 with several hundred customers and will slowly transit the system into a regular service. Some customers have high-speed internet, others don’t have it, some have cable, and others have DTH satellite.

He added that the company also wanted to ensure that other areas are running smoothly such as billing. Gerlach didn’t want to disclose when Vodafone TV would enter the mass market. Industry sources suggest that the company is eyeing late January or early February.

Huawei bags one third of LTE contract

Huawei is the LTE market leader in terms of contracts signed, accounting for more than a third of the deals signed to date, according to reports. That’s more than twice as many as 4G deals as the nearest rivals, Ericsson and Nokia Siemens.

Certainly, the sizes of those deals are with developing market operators. When it comes to the dollars, Ericsson is still the global champion. Ericsson is also looking for some high-profile early deployments, such as the TeliaSonera’s network, which went live last December, and the first US LTE launch by MetroPCS last month.

Huawei has signed 18 contracts for commercial LTE deployments or 36% of the total – including deals with some major players including TeliaSonera, Vodafone Germany and China Mobile.

Twelve LTE networks have been deployed, with two tier one operators Verizon Wireless and NTT DoCoMo due to light up by year-end.

To this number add one more – Hong Kong’s CSL, which will reveal its 4G service isusing a network built by Huawei’s rival ZTE.
