4th license awarded to ETC in Congo

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Equateur Telecom Congo (ETC), a subsidiary company of Bahrain-based Bintel has been awarded the fourth mobile operating license in the Republic of Congo.

The other three license holders in the country are Zain Congo with a market share of 49.7%, MTN Congo with 41.9% and Warid Congo with 8.5%. .

ETC is already operating in Gabon, Central African Republic and Somalia. According to Thierry Lezin Moungalla, Congo’s minister for post and telecommunications, the new business will help develop Congo’s economy

MTN in Uganda has raised USD 100 Million for network expansion with Absa Capital as the lead arranger.

Stanbic Bank, Standard Chartered, Kenya Commercial Bank, Barclays, DFCU and Orient bank participated to raise the amount.  Isaac Nsereko, chief marketing officer of MTN Uganda confirmed the development to Reuters.

Uganda has a total of 6 telecom players: Uganda Telecom (UTL), Zain, Orange, Warid, I-Telecom and MTN. MTN is the largest with 60% market share and just under 5 million subscribers, according to Isaac Nsereko.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: O2 UK has joined hands with Twitter to offer free Twitter alerts to its subscribers. From 1 August, O2 subscribers will be able to switch on text notifications within Twitter and receive replies and direct messages free of charge. Subscribers can also receive and send updates on Twitter as part of their normal text message bundle or for the cost of a standard text message.
O2 will restrict it subscribers by a fair use policy for Twitter texts to a maximum of 600 messages per month. O2’s head of content Antony Douglas said the operator believed that mobile phones would soon become the most popular way of accessing social networking sites.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Telecom New Zealand has reported seen a growth of 700% in the number of subscribers using Facebook on their mobile since January’09. The time when the operator launched its XT Network, it also launched Facebook text notifications which included new messages, friends’ status updates or friend requests. This service also allows subscribers to update their status, search for phone numbers, or upload photos and videos from their mobile phone. Since the launch of XT, nearly 2,500 Telecom subscribers are using Facebook messaging every day.
The operator also introduced Twitter updates via SMS. Receiving updates from these social networking sites is free of cost.

Subscribers can get started by logging into their Twitter account and updating their settings, after which they can use Twitter on the go right from their mobile phone by using the short code 21212. www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Vodafone New Zealand has inked an agreement with Twitter to enable subscriber to send updates and receive TXT notifications from the messaging network. Vodafone subscribers will be able to receive TXT messages from people they choose to follow via TXT on Twitter and send messages to a short code for their “tweets”, @replies, or to follow someone on the go.
Regular TXT charges will applicable to subscribers ending tweets via TXT and all TXT message updates sent from Twitter will be free of charge. While receiving a text message from Twitter with a URL, subscribers will be have to click on the link and access the publicised webpage directly from their mobiles. The service will launch in few weeks.
