www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Aiming the position of world’s fourth largest producer of the devices by replacing the current position holder HTC, Samsung has decided to triple the shipment of its handset this year.

On the achievement of the target, 8% share of the smartphone market in 2010 will be achieved by Samsung. Currently, Samsung enjoys just 3% market share.

Samsung’s operating system BADA will power Samsung’s smartphone strategy. Besides, Samsung is increasing its line-up of Android handsets, a move that deals a blow to Microsoft’s Windows Mobile OS.

Hutchison 3G Austria is modernizing its radio access network to be ready for HSPA+ and the next generation of mobile broadband, or LTE. At the same time this step will allow the operator to halve the energy consumption of its base stations. Nokia Siemens Networks will undertake this upgrade starting in autumn 2009.

“The demand for increased mobile broadband capacity and throughput in Austria is reflected in the increasing usage of data cards and mobile services like Mobile TV, video download or video sharing,” said Berthold Thoma, CEO of Hutchison 3G Austria. “Mobile broadband is also one of the most pragmatic solutions to bridging the digital gap between cities and rural areas. For rural areas, mobile broadband coverage is simply less expensive and faster to deploy than “fiber to the home” solutions. We hope that with our nationwide coverage we will contribute significantly to this end.” (more…)

AIRCOM International, the leading independent network planning and optimisation consultancy, today announced that it has signed a deal to deliver network optimisation tools to MTN Uganda. MTN continues to deploy GSM network infrastructure across Uganda and now provides mobile coverage to over 150 cities, towns and villages across the country. MTN chose AIRCOM to ensure its customers enjoy an optimum quality of mobile service, as infrastructure continues to expand across the country.
MTN selected AIRCOM following a detailed evaluation of available network solutions. The African operator selected AIRCOM’s DATASAFE tool as the best means to manage the ongoing re-configuring and updating of radio nodes within the network to maintain the best possible network service. AIRCOM’s flexible approach to pricing was another telling factor, particularly in view of the current global financial down turn.
“As Uganda’s leading service provider, we have established unprecedented consumer popularity and brand recognition,” said Francis Kazinduki, CTO, MTN Uganda. “It is therefore critical that we make a clear commitment to our customers and deliver the strongest possible network quality of service. Our work with AIRCOM is evidence of our determination to continue providing market leading communications services to our subscribers.”
“Effective configuration management is a critical factor in the process of building and maintaining quality networks,” said Graham Kemp, Managing Director, Africa, AIRCOM International. “By deploying DATASAFE, MTN Uganda will join other subsidiaries of the MTN Group in benefiting from the seamless, automated network reconfiguration techniques which maximize network quality.”
Configuration management has always been the subject of performance manager’s headaches, due to erroneous data transcript and configuration files, which have the potential to cause outages and poor levels of service. DATASAFE meets this challenge by offering a central repository and a multi-vendor, multi-technology tool that enables operators to work within a single configuration management environment, dramatically reducing operational overheads.

RICE-JONES LEAVES MOTOROLA FOR AIRCOM

Margaret Rice-Jones, Corporate Vice President and General Manager of Motorola Networks’ Core Networks business, and as such a very senior body within Motorola’s 3G and 4GH networks division, has left the company to take up the top job at Aircom.

Aircom provides OSS, network planning and optimisation solutions to the mobile industry, and its previous ceo and founder Steve Mockford has taken a new role as head of business development Northern Europe and Africa.

“It is a privilege to be joining a successful company at such an exciting time in its history”, Ms. Rice-Jones says, “We are seeing growth in every region, and with technologies changing rapidly, complexity growing and customers looking for ever shorter times to market new services, they increasingly turn to other people to support their network engineering needs. I believe that AIRCOM is well on its way to become one of the leaders in the next generation of OSS companies, and I intend to see it fulfil all of its potential.”

Rice-Jones is well known within the mobile industry, and represents a loss to Motorola, which has struggled in 3G, and now has its hopes pinned on “beyond” 3G technologies.
