T-Mobile cutting prices for wireless calls in Germany

FRANKFURT (AFX) – Deutsche Telekom AG’s wireless unit T-Mobile said it is slashing prices for mobile phone calls in Germany to boost mobile usage.

T-Mobile is launching three new tariffs that will allow clients in Germany to make calls on their mobiles for less than 10 euro cents per minute, said Philipp Humm, head of T-Mobile’s German operations.

In comparison, the average price for a mobile phone call in Germany is currently 22 euro cents per minute.

Humm told reporters the new tariffs are designed to counteract the image that mobile calls in Germany are expensive.

Deutsche Telekom came under pressure earlier this month when it was forced to cut its operating income and sales forecasts for 2006 and 2007 as second quarter results missed expectations due to fierce competition in Germany.
